Which moon phase is best to hunt during the rut, the full or new moon? I know any time you can hunt during the rut you need to take advantage of. But there has to be days that may be better than others due to the moon.

Whichever one hits during cold weather. Personally, I prefer a full moon.

Bonehead-what is a rut moon?

During the rut, nothing matters besides the weather. The moon's influence is too weak.

Im a firm believer that cold weather has the greatest influence during the rut. However in pre-rut, a full moon has provided lots of buck sightings for me especially in the evening. Not necessarily right before dark either. Killed my best bow buck to date last year in the first of November on a full moon day. Watched him and his buddies for an hour before he finally strolled into range. Unfortunately for me, the "big boy" showed up at 35 yards while I was descending down my stand to retrieve the one I shot. Needless to say I never saw him again.

Well..i have been under the impression all this time that it's the 2nd full moon after the fall equinox.( i think it is later this year?)

I just always called it the rut moon. is this wrong?

I personally have never had much luck hunting full. Know guy's that have, but not me.

Hot, Hot weather isn't much fun either....

I don't know if that is right or wrong. Since I firmly believe the moon has nothing to do with the rut, I never tried to keep up with it. I just had never heard the phrase. I heard of a hunters moon but never knew which one that was, either.

The best times I've had hunting a full moon were on nice crisp days when I climbed into my stand about 1:30 in the afternoon and the moon was overhead. Other than that I'll take whatever's up there.

Don't really like a full moon so I guess it would be a new moon
