I think some scrapes are used all the time.KIlled a 130 inch deer about six years ago on opening day working a scrape. It was the first evening of TN archery deer season and he was the second buck I saw in it that day.

The increased testosterone that drives bucks' velvet shedding (happening now) also increases their scraping activity.

Makes sense BSK!!! The white oaks where falling big time. That scrape that had just been pissed in was next to a scrape frome last yr. A old liking branch gave it away.
And buy the size of the horned tree's next to all this looks to be a very nice deer.i hope....

In the early season, it's pretty common to find scrapes and smallish rubs around dominant trees. Here are some photos of an area around a dominant black oak that I posted on my blog last September 15. http://www.pursuithunting.com/2009/09/hot-and-nasty.html
I'd be surprised if the deer paid any attention to the scrapes once the tree pans out. Seems like the scrapes and rubs you find early are more about the boys just being boys and flexing their newfound horns and hormones than trying to communicate. They seem to do it wherever they are spending time feeding.
If you find a spot with lots of buck sign like that and fresh feeding sign, you better climb a tree nearby and get ready... Now that's what keeps me up the night before a hunt.

Exactly PH, last year on Labor day weekend in Pike co. Illinois, I found the same thing, heavy feed sign under an oak and some fresh scrapes with some very impressive rubs to go with it! I was really surprised by the damage done to the rubbed trees, looked more like what you should find in Late October or early November!

I can't remember a time when we've seen scrapes before Nov, this being after summertime. I've seen scraping activity continue off and on from Nov thru March, but seems the bucks don't move into our area until just before any rut action commences.

Our first scrapes--generally around field edges--always show up by September 15.

Yep, I checked some of my cameras last night and saw a couple of fresh scrapes at the edge of a field just inside the woodline on an old logging road.
