The area where I hunt is Timber co. land so it has alot of 4-8 yr old pines, however there is a fire lane around the entire 1400 acres that is bordered on all sides by hardwoods. Yep, you guessed it. I do most of my gun season hunting walking the perimiter of our property. It has produced alot of deer. With that being said, there is a proper time to do this. After a rain, when the wind is right etc. good judgement and patients and you can have alot of fun doing it.

I have not hunted out of a stand in 10 years and it was the best move I could have made for me, anyways. The numbers and quality of deer greatly improved for me. It is an art and you just can not start out walking blindly through the woods. Planning your routes of approach can change daily and most definately knowing the lay of the property you hunt is essential to being successful. Instead of sitting in a stand and hopefully waiting for the deer to come to me I go to them. You just never know what can be happening the next hollow over or on other areas of the property while sitting in the stand especially during the rut. Of course if you are hunting where there are multiple hunters it can be more difficult but if on private land and you are the only hunter then go for it!

I've had good sucess stalking but the weather condtions dictate weather of not I move around . Wet or windy condtions or I stay put !!!
