Ok I have a 300lb electric chain hoist. I am wanting to build something to hang it from so I can hoist up deer and in the summer time hoist up front of my mower to make changing/sharpening blades a bit easier. Let see some pics or hear some ideas you guys have. I have thought about doing it inside my shed with 9ft ceiling but the rafters are only 2x4 and wouldnt seem strong enough to lift my mower up. Thanks in advace.

Chris

Could always build it outside close to your shed. Could use a couple 4x4's x 12 feet long. Bury those in the ground 2 to 3 feet with some quickcrete around them. Then use a 4x6 header whatever width that you want it to be. This would work great for a deer or a lawnmower lift. As I said put it close to your shed, so that you could have electric close by if you happen to need it at night or need to reach it to use electrical tools when working on stuff. Rick

How wide is your shed? If it is not too wide you could always sister a 2x6 or 2x8 to one of the 2x4's. Make sure you run it from top plate of one wall to top plate of the other wall. That should be plenty strong for what you need.

I took a 4x4 and ran it length wise over 6 of the 2x4s to spred the weight and hooked my hoist to it I changed my blades on my mower the other day and it seemed to do just fine so I guess I have it worked out. Thanks guys.

where did you get your hoist from?

I'd like to get something like that set up at my place.

762 it was something that my father in law got from his work many years ago and had sat outside and the switch was froze up. He had it on a trailer headed for the dump, I pulled it out and replaced the switch and had to do a little work on the magnetic brake that kept it at height and now it works like a charm.
