Field and Stream has stated the last several years that the best day to be in the woods is Nov 11 or 12. Here in NE TN my buddy swears Thanksgiving starts the rut? Thoughts....

IMO...everyone tries to guess the rut. There is so much that can effect it. So here is my take, it will get here when it gets here and be ready to react. I know where I'll be when the rut does get here...

the best day to be in woods is every day that you can...just go.

Sure, the rut is great and you may see more deer but they don't hibernate the rest of the season...many great deer are killed early season, pre-rut and even post-rut,,,,just go already.

It's impossible to predict a day when activity is best everywhere. That's just an average date for the country.

Any writer that predicts when the rut is going to happen is either a liar or strictly talking in general about the specific area he hunts...particularly here in the south. Even then he could miss it by a week. There are just too many variables. To compound mis-predictions, with the weather and fluctuating temps we have here in the south many times the rut could be going on and 99% of it happening at night. Just here in the state of Tn peak rut timing ranges from the first week in Nov through the first week in Dec. A general rule of thumb would be that regarding the specific area you hunt, and provided that the weather co-operates (daytime temps not exceeding 45 degrees), the rut should crank up in YOUR area the same time every year within a 2-5 day period either side of normal timing. The trick is to be there when the switch is thrown. I can't stress that point enough. If there's any way possible to use your vacation time to be in the woods during that time frame do it. It'll start on the turn of a dime and if you hit it right it's worth the wait.

7 years ago a friend of mine started hunting Ohio. The first year he went the "magical time" was Oct. 31st- Nov. 3rd. He saw heavy rutting and killed a good one. It hasn't hit those dates since. Last year it was closer to Nov.11th and the year before that it was later in Nov. Obviously this will vary from farm to farm and county to county. He just plans his trip around Nov. 6th and stays a week. Cold weather has been influential each time also.

Cold weather is a little more predictable in the north.

I have saved about 2 weeks of vacation this year...I hunt from Sept to Jan so hopefully with my days off and the weekends I will have plenty of opportunities.

I try to cover the last week of muzzleloader season through the end of the first rifle season non-stop. I'm going to see some rutting action.

Impossible to guess an exact day when the rut will occur, you could drive an hour in parts of tn and the rut will be hot and cold as ice an hour away

Exactly. Peak breeding dates are highly localized. Ask hunters in MS (where peak breeding isn't until December or January) if Nov. 12th or any date in November is the single best date to hunt.

Dickson and Cheatham county join each other. However, the peak of the rut has known to vary as much as week between the two counties. I fail to see how a writer can know more about the rut than a deer.

Very special when it kicks in just right though.

The rut hits my place in Miss during the same 2 week window every year, and has for as long as I can remember. It hits in a 2 week window here on my property as well. IT could start early in that 2 week window or start towards the end, but by golly it is going to go during that time.

If it is hot then it does suppress a little of what we as hunters would witness but even then it only seems to suppress it a little. For instance, the last 3 years I have been invited to go hunt in GA during their rut, we go for the same 5 days each year, and even with temps last year in the high 80's the daylight rutting activity was very very strong.

Bottom line IMO, figure out that window for where you hunt, and get in the woods.

On our lease in Greene/Cocke county the rut generally kicks in around the last 2 weeks of November give r take a day. But..on our farm in Rutherford county its normally right smack in the middle say the 11th thru the 20th also give er take some days. Noone can exactly predict the rut,,,IMO its all about knowing the area u hunt, but they will always throw u for a loop no matter how well u have it figured out.

Those peak rut date ranges sound pretty accurate.

Just remember that actual peak breeding dates don't always lead to the best hunting days. "Bad" weather conditions (hot temps) can force all that breeding activity into the nightime hours and make daylight rutting actvity nill.

On a very large project in western GA, where we were shooting a lot of does late enough in the year to get very good fetal conception dates, experienced hunters were asked to identify when they saw peak rutting activity each year. These hunting observations varied from year to year by as much as three weeks, yet the actual peak conception dates were not varying by more than a day or two each year. Weather conditions would produce "good" days for daylight rutting activity that didn't correspond with actual peak breeding, fooling the hunters.
