I don't know very many hunters that take more than one buck a year anyway. Are there really a lot who kill three a year? (serious queston) I killed two, both culls. nothing pretty but I'm glad they didn't get much time to breed last year.
MK- Just curious, how do you know they were culls?

Why? How do you know that trait is passed on? Or is that a justification for shooting a buck with a small rack? Using that criteria, I would never have married my wife and she isn't a cull
I hear the "cull buck" term used most often when a hunter brings a perfectly healthy buck with a small rack to the check station, as in, "I wouldn't have shot him but I wanted to cull him from the gene pool."
HOGWASH!

HOGWASH! No sir, its actually an excuse most times for me to NOT shoot him because his rack doesnt fit the bill. Its a shame when a buck reaches full maturity and still has a small rack, IMO anyway. I know it happens pretty often in many areas but it still sux! I know what your talking about when people use the term "cull buck" and shoot a buck before he's mature because his rack is ugly or small or deformed, and I agree these bucks arent culls yet and may very well grow out of it. But once a buck reaches full maturity, yet still has a small rack, he's a cull in my eyes! Many times I dont even shoot these culls because I dont want to waste my tag on a buck Im not happy with.

If a buck is being "removed" for the purpose of improving genetics, then correct, it is HOGWASH.

This I agree with, as killing any particular buck isnt going to help or hurt the genetics of the deer in an area! But if he's mature with a small rack he's a cull IMO! Just like a 2 1/2 yr old with a super rack is a STUD IMO. Works both ways! But killing either of these deer wont likely help or hurt!

If someone is "culling" a small-antlered mature buck just so he isn't around (not eating resources), that's fine.

Winchester, you and I are agreeing, you just use terms I don't. But we are saying the same thing.
