Nothing to be confused about. Everyone lost the Florida game because Florida did not cover the spread. The odds makers and points setters all felt that Florida was runaway favorite in this game.
Brief Explanation:
The spread is the great equalizer. It gives both teams equal footing in the game for gambling and pick'em purposes.
For example:
Florida was a 36.5 point favorite over Miami of Ohio. Florida didn't cover the spread, which means if Florida won by anything less than 36.5 points, Miami of Ohio was the winner. If Florida had won by exactly 36.5 points it would be considered a tie (or push).

I have never played the spread someone explain it to me, I have to pick Arkansas St. over Auburn and Auburn wins by 30????

Short Answer yes.
Auburn was a 31 point favorite over ARK State. The final score was AUB 52-ARk State 26. Once again everyone picked Auburn to win and we all lost that game.
I got 3 right, you will rarely see anyone get them all right. The spread is there to make it difficult. It comes down to who is willing to make a choice that is different, like an ARK State.
You will see some outlandish looking spreads from time to time. The biggest I have ever seen was 69 points. I picked against the favorite and lost. They won the game by 72 points. Usually as the season progresses and the odds makers get a better feel for a team the spreads will be just about dead on correct.

To get good at this you will have to do some research on the teams involved. You can play your gut, or you can put in some time and do some research on the teams involved.
You can get some decent information from web site called bettors world. They usually are pretty good at picking teams.
As a general rule, most of your SEC teams will cover the spread. The first game of the season is really like a warm up game and they identify their holes and fix them. Next week it should be a little easier to pick.
