We have an unwritten/mutual agreement on our farm---No "tromping around". This includes stalking.
We go straight to and from our stands/truck. In my opinion, deer (big deer) will go nocturnal at the drop of a hat. I feel if one still hunts, he cannot help leaving some odor, reguardless of scent control, spread throughout the route he travels.
Big deer will pick up on human presence, long after you are gone. The more this happens, the higher the red flag is raised! I have had people to tell me that they stalked without spooking a single deer.

What they failed to realize, is that they very well may have alerted a buck. He could be bedded, well hiden and patiently allowed that hunter to walk right by. They dont always "explode" away.
With all the human comosion that comes with deer season, that we cant avoid if we are going to hunt, such as to and from stands, I feel that the odds are already stacked against us for a mature buck. With this being said, I feel that although a well executed stalk can produce results, there is a lot better chance that stalking will most likely make it hard on the one doing it, as well as everone else hunting that location.

I think there is as much value in being patient and staying put in one spot as there is to deciding it's time to move (smartly, of course). I would have never killed my first deer if I hadn't decided to move 80 yards and look over a ridge at 10:15am. There he was.

Hunting is all about decisions. That's why this forum exists. Decisions. We get advice from others so that we can make informed decisions. I imagine getting any advice directly from a deer would prove to be too wishy-washy! They're just so unpredictable!

Ive killed a few like that but, most every-time I try and stalk I'm the one that gets spotted. \:D Guess I'm too fat and clumsy. Using gut factor to select a stand location now there is something I swear by.

I guess that I will chime in......

Just my opinion here, not being judgemental...

the only time that I will "move' during the season is to change a stand location.

When I go to and from a stand site, I do so as quickly and quietly as possible. I never linger around. My thoughts are that I need to get set up and ready as soon as I can.

No need in being half way there and get busted or be climbing into your stand and get busted. How many here have been in your stand, but not ready(setting up) and have deer walk by you? To me, if I'm on the ground, then I'm not ready.

Also, I always try to lessen my scent in the area as much as possible. I try to pick ways in that will minimize by "impact" on the area. I HATE to cross deer trails as I'm going in.

IMO, to randomly walk (stalk) through the area that you are hunting can often do alot of damage to the area. This damage may be simply "hipping" the deer to your presence......I'm not sure how long human scent stays around, but I know that if I have left my scent all through the woods recently, then I have no confidence in hunting that area for quite a few days or even longer...

I guess that is we are differant to some extent..It sounds like you are not menatlly into the hunting/predator mind set untill you are in your stand "set up and ready"... I try to stay into the mental awareness of the hunt at all times. From the time I arm my weapon I AM HUNTING...I try to be mentally prepaired to take advantage of any opportunity to kill an animal when ever and where ever the opportunity may arise.

"Randomly walking" has nothing to do with still hunting or stalking technics...which are two differant things by the way..and each can be very effective and productive in the right conditions...I have no hesitation in taking the hunt to the animal under the right conditions...it is a totally differant experiance than just setting in a stand and waiting...

I agree. By "stalking" I don't mean randomly/carelessly meandering through the woods. The places where I hunt are very steep and rugged. Some areas you may only be able to see 75 yards in any direction.

Most times, for me, the hunt is about getting to a location where I expect deer to be, and wait it out for hours. The majority of the time sitting in one spot produces nothing, and there have been times where I have just needed to see what was beyond the next ridge.

And there have been times where sitting still for "30 more minutes" has meant filling the freezer.

I like variety in my hunting. I do not use tree stands (mainly, because my wife won't let me!)

I MUST ADD...getting busted by a deer or two on the way to a spot (say, in the afternoon) DOES NOT MEAN a ruined hunt. I have seen spooked deer run off, and less than 5 minutes later a brand new deer will enter the area unsuspecting.

when i use to hunt with a gun I rarely used tree stands in the morning except first half hour of light, the rest of the time i was creeping throught the woods slowly being extremely quite and cautious of the wind, glassing the woods with my binos almost every 25 yds or more, it might take an hour to move 100 yds if i felt i needed to be that cautious, this is where the spiritual side of hunting comes in for me, when my gut tells me to move to another spot I move, when my gut tells me to sit tight and wait or rattle I do that, the instincts that God has given us to be connected to the woods is amazing if we can connect to them the way native americans did, I once stalked up on a bedded doe and touched her hind quarter, pretty dumb I know but the wind was blowing pretty good and the ground was silent and I wanted to see if I could do it, she jumped out of her skin and took off like nothing Ive ever seen a deer do and my backside got tight as drum too, since I dont hunt with a gun anymore I havent done much actual stalking but now that Im shooting a recurve this year I may attempt a couple of stalks since the recurve shot is so quick unlike the compound, for me its all about the challenge and sometimes its about the head gear which is the most challenging to me, I never care whether or not I kill a deer....its just if I can get in his or her space without him knowing is the thrill, I guess Im more voyeuristic when it comes to wildlife and less of a hunter/killer

I seldom if ever still hunt,(stalk) in the same area I have stands. However, I have killed several deer walking to my stand. I don't start into the woods until I can see to shoot and do not worry one bit about busting deer going in or out. The key is not to stop, just keep walking.

I love to still hunt in the a soft rain or right after a rain. I have killed a lot of deer that way. If you do enough of it, you find there are places that are more suited to it than others. I know several very good and successfull hunters who do nothing but still hunt.

When I'm going to and from the stand I stalk if conditions right.
When the season becomes early winter with the leaves down I still hunt sometimes to fill my tag & learn more about of my hunting area, and my quarry, If conditions are right...
I also will do a push at times with my hunting partner.
I get real board sitting in a stand at times, especially later on in the season.
