This morning, while waiting on my brother to get to my house so we could make a 4 hr drive to Humphrey Co. to do a little deer scouting, I came across an artical on Deer and Deer Hunting's web site. I have many, many times thought of and asked my self the question, "was the passion I have for deer hunting an idolatry". This artical raised the same questions and thoughts I had asked myself, and also gives sobering insight and answers. The artical is titled "Great Sport, Horrible God", and is supposed to be in the Aug. issue of Deer and Deer Hunting magazine. I know this was God answering my question. This artical sure helped me to re-prioritize! I wish everyone a great season, and God bless you all.

This is something that many folks should be asking thierselfs imo..I can't tell you how many people I know that have turned thier homes into shrines for whitetailed deer and other animals...YES it is Idolatry for many many hunters...wheteher they even realize it or not, many of them are simply worshiping the animals they hunt...imo.

I must say that I can see the author's point. My problem with some people is that they spend far to much time with "hunting buddies" and down at "hunting camps" than they do at home with their wife and kids. That's why most marriages suffer and many men blame their wives for being a B-word......

Even though I love to deer hunt and log many hours every season, I never put it at the top of my priority list. There ARE other things that are more important.

As far as deer mounts go...I have nine mounts and two europeans.

I would not consider having one small room in an entire home full of mounts a shrine.....Just as I would not consider a room full of paintings, a shrine to art.

For me , as a lifelong hunter, I really love the way that deer mounts look as part of an OUTDOOR theme to a room or setting...

I never really considered them shrines, but more decorations and a simply way to honor and pay homage to an animal that gave me so much pleasure in pursuing it....I don't see me worshipping them anytime soon, though...lol.

One last thing.......many families get closer by sharing the deer hunting experience. Many kids may not turn out to be as good of a kid without this interaction.....IMO, the more you stay in the woods pursuing your passion, the less likely you are to get in to trouble elsewhere...

I'd much rather have a kid that spent TOO MUCH time in the deer woods, than too much time on the streets....

As far as GOD goes.......I see it as putting God's glorious creation where it should be...on a pedestal. Actually, I never feel any closer to God then when I'm out in the deer woods....

Just curious here, and not book thumping by any means..And I ask these questions to everyone, including myself, as it relates to the artical that was brought up...
How many things, pictures, figurinse, bibles etc... do you (we) have in your home(on obvious display) to honor and pay homage to GOD and our faith?..When some body walks into your (our) house is it just as obvious that someone can tell you are are a person of religious faith and conviction just as much as you are a hunter? ...If its not, than maybe we need to start prioritizing things a little bit better, especially if that is what we are going to keep claiming is at the center of our hearts to begin with...just sayin...

Although I don't look at it from a religious perspective, I do agree with the author that this part of hunting has become a problem:

"...our fascination with larger-than-life hunting celebrities, our constant push to develop new gadgets and gear, and our compulsive competition to shoot the largest racks..."

I believe FAR too many hunters--myself included--have lost their perspective about hunting.

That's why I'm getting off the "big buck" train and going back to hunting as a form of enjoyment and recreation.
