This morning, while waiting on my brother to get to my house so we could make a 4 hr drive to Humphrey Co. to do a little deer scouting, I came across an artical on Deer and Deer Hunting's web site. I have many, many times thought of and asked my self the question, "was the passion I have for deer hunting an idolatry". This artical raised the same questions and thoughts I had asked myself, and also gives sobering insight and answers. The artical is titled "Great Sport, Horrible God", and is supposed to be in the Aug. issue of Deer and Deer Hunting magazine. I know this was God answering my question. This artical sure helped me to re-prioritize! I wish everyone a great season, and God bless you all.

This is something that many folks should be asking thierselfs imo..I can't tell you how many people I know that have turned thier homes into shrines for whitetailed deer and other animals...YES it is Idolatry for many many hunters...wheteher they even realize it or not, many of them are simply worshiping the animals they hunt...imo.

I must say that I can see the author's point. My problem with some people is that they spend far to much time with "hunting buddies" and down at "hunting camps" than they do at home with their wife and kids. That's why most marriages suffer and many men blame their wives for being a B-word......
Even though I love to deer hunt and log many hours every season, I never put it at the top of my priority list. There ARE other things that are more important.
As far as deer mounts go...I have nine mounts and two europeans.
I would not consider having one small room in an entire home full of mounts a shrine.....Just as I would not consider a room full of paintings, a shrine to art.
For me , as a lifelong hunter, I really love the way that deer mounts look as part of an OUTDOOR theme to a room or setting...
I never really considered them shrines, but more decorations and a simply way to honor and pay homage to an animal that gave me so much pleasure in pursuing it....I don't see me worshipping them anytime soon, though...lol.
One last thing.......many families get closer by sharing the deer hunting experience. Many kids may not turn out to be as good of a kid without this interaction.....IMO, the more you stay in the woods pursuing your passion, the less likely you are to get in to trouble elsewhere...
I'd much rather have a kid that spent TOO MUCH time in the deer woods, than too much time on the streets....
As far as GOD goes.......I see it as putting God's glorious creation where it should be...on a pedestal. Actually, I never feel any closer to God then when I'm out in the deer woods....

Although I don't look at it from a religious perspective, I do agree with the author that this part of hunting has become a problem:
"...our fascination with larger-than-life hunting celebrities, our constant push to develop new gadgets and gear, and our compulsive competition to shoot the largest racks..."
I believe FAR too many hunters--myself included--have lost their perspective about hunting.
That's why I'm getting off the "big buck" train and going back to hunting as a form of enjoyment and recreation.

As far as deer mounts go...I have nine mounts and two europeans.
Just curious here, and not book thumping by any means..And I ask these questions to everyone, including myself, as it relates to the artical that was brought up... How many things, pictures, figurinse, bibles etc... do you (we) have in your home(on obvious display) to honor and pay homage to GOD and our faith?..When some body walks into your (our) house is it just as obvious that someone can tell you are are a person of religious faith and conviction just as much as you are a hunter? ...If its not, than maybe we need to start prioritizing things a little bit better, especially if that is what we are going to keep claiming is at the center of our hearts to begin with...just sayin...
Do you think that God wants to be "on display" in your home, like a trophy or some rock star/pro athlete that you have posters of in your room.....?
IMO, religion is more of a personal nature.....
I guess that's why all these billions of dollars a year are spent on building "shrines" to God and seeing who can build the biggest and the most expensive cathedral....????? maybe God doesn't want that, but would prefer his children to use that money for the good of all....Maybe it's the devil that's telling Christians to spend their money so foolishly...? "just sayin"
I doubt that God cares whether or not I have a shrine in my home or that I have pictures of what we perceive to be what he (or Jesus) looks like hanging up.....
My deer mounts pay homage to a great hunt and a great experience....I'm not worshipping a deer....geesh!!
I have God in my heart and , in my opinion, he's good with that.....
If someone comes up to me and tells me what I need to do to get right with God, I just tell them to prove that their way is the right way.......I do what I feel is RIGHT, you do the same....
thanks

God made us love it, as he made us predators. Denying that love would be denying his will. I think as long as we are following christian principles, we are doing his will.

I have a few deer heads, 6 ducks, a huge bobcat, a turkey fan w beards, and a fish in my mancave. The rest of the house is the wife's for her decor and womanly touch. She has several family pictures of not only our family but my side and her side of the family. Our bibles are not on display cause they are to be read and studied. I don't have one out for looks to let someone know I'm a Christian. I fail daily doing it, but I try and show my faith daily by living right. Like I said, I fail miserably at it but I am a work in progress. I think we need to live it by walking the walk instead of decorations, talk, and material things. People that go into my mancave see I like to hunt and like sports. If I have been studying my bible down there they will see it.
Off from that---I have had some of my best prayer time in a tree stand. It's one place where I can take in all the beauty of God's wonderful creation and THANK him for many, many things. Many times my prayers are for forgiveness and wants but in the outdoors it's thanks and praise. My family sacrifices for me to hunt and I do not or try not to take advantage of it. I take care of home things first and then do my hunting. Thankfully I get the "benefit of the doubt" alot and get to go more than expected. I hope and pray we all enjoy or season this year. Like BSK said...let's just get back to enjoying hunting for what it is and be thankful we can do so.

I think everyone should have a personal relationship with God and enjoy all his creations here on earth. Over the last several years my success rate has been very low but that doesn't stop me from getting out there and enjoying the beauty of a great sunrise. Your right it has gotten to the point now that if you don't kill three or four bucks or at least one good buck every year you're not much of a hunter. I have one fairly good mount on my wall but I have a lot of great memories when I was hunting with my children and other children as well but also good times that I spent with my family outside of hunting(vacations, ball games and church etc.)that mean more to me than my hunting. Just my opinion but if we make time for God and family our hunting time will be even more enjoyable. God bless.

I really think that this article could be applied to anything we admire, collect, or cherish. People have shrines in their garages in the cars they cherish, the elctronics in their homes (always getting the latest, biggest, best TVs and components), jewelry, clothing and shoes, golf equipment....you name it. You will always find people with more TVs on display in their homes than they have crosses or references to Christianity, just as there are those who are completely opposite.
This is a great subject and one that definitely will cause some readers to evaluate or reevaluate their priorities...which is definitely a good thing and hopefully what the end result of this thread topic and magazine article are hoping to accomplish.

I honor God every day that I wake up and thank him for another day......I honor him by treating my fellow man with respect and dignity. I honor him when I respect his creation by being an ethical hunter.
I don't have neon lights on my home proclaiming my faith , but more honor HIM by my actions and the examples that i set for others.....
I guess that every man with deer heads on his wall is a sinner and going to H....!
Most times, those that "yell the loudest" are the ones with the least amount to yell about........
IMO, if we all worried as much about our salvation as we do about others, then maybe we would be better examples....
the best way to lead is by example......right?
Now, go out there and enjoy what the good Lord has given us all and if you shoot a nice deer and want to get it mounted to admire and share with others, then go ahead. I don't think that God is too worried about being replaced by a deer head..........

It can be an idol, depending on if its put before GOD. I myself was afraid that I was letting it become an idol several years ago. I started praying about it,and asked GOD to help me put HIM first in my life. I now know that deer hunting is not the most important thing in my life. My skills as a hunter comes from GOD, I am just an instrument in his hands, and thank HIM each time WE harvest a deer what ever it might be.

There is a great book about idolatry by Tim Keller called "Counerfeit God's." http://www.counterfeitgods.com/
Although it doesn't discuss deer hunting as an idol, the message of the book is eye openeing and forced me to examine my priorities and everything being discussed here. Keller is a great writer and very easy to read. I highly recommend it. Get a copy and take it to the stand with you this year.

Do you think that God wants to be "on display" in your home, like a trophy or some rock star/pro athlete that you have posters of in your room.....?
IMO, religion is more of a personal nature.....
IMO...I think that is exactly what GOD wants, and expects.... ..matthew 5:15.... I read Matthew 5:15 as it pertains to ones' actions, not a material item.
You could easily make the argument that any religious picture or display is idolatry; maybe an easier argument to make, as it is religious in nature in and of itself.

I have 2 deer mounts, 2 turkey fans and about 10 family hunting photos that include my great grandfather, grandfather, my dad and my boys. I smile each time I look at that wall. Why because it is part of who I am and where I come from. How I live my life, How I raise my boys, How I treat my marriage and how I treat others well thats where God comes in. The hunting part is just part of the living life.

Do you think that Tim Tebow doesn't have his football trophies displayed in a room of his home.....?
Sometimes, people take this sort of thing way too far......
Worship how you think is right and let others do the same thing....judgement should be left to God, not man.
thanks.....and good luck with this....

From the heart, I feel I miss too many Sundays at church to go sit in the deer woods. However I feel closer to God in the deer woods than some days at church. I keep a small Bible in my pack and I do read in my stand. I talk to God more in my stand than during any other activity I do. I really feel hunting brings me closer to God in many ways. I have lots of deer racks in my home, I also have my Bible out on my table. I enjoy sitting back and relaxing looking at the deer on my wall and at the same time thanking God for the blessing of meat on the table and the memory of the hunt!

I really feel hunting brings me closer to God in many ways.
I couldn't agree more.

Dropping my 5 yr old off to his Sunday School classroom gives me a feeling I can't explain. Especially him looking forward to it as the family is getting ready on Sunday a.m. Teaching every 3rd Sunday School lesson in my adult class stresses me out, but it is enjoyable as well.

He must have a good Sunday School.
As a kid, I despised Sunday School.

When I was a kid, I only went to Sunday School in hopes of donuts and juice LOL.
But as the age increases, the woods are the closest thing to Heaven for me. That's when I really get the peace of mind to enfoy life and talk to God.

IF you wonder whether it is idolatry or not,,,,read the Bible and see.
IF you wonder whether you spend too much time hunting,,,,,read the Bible and see.
IF you believe the woods can replace the Church,,,,,,,,read the Bible and see.
IF you are right with God, you WILL always consult with His Word and obey His guidance.
There are two types of judging,,,,,,,,,,,,the lost and the saved.
One is commanded to do and one is demanded not to.
Again,,,,,,,,read the Bible and see.

He does like his ss class and it is a good one. No donuts in his, the adult class has the coffee and donuts.
I like a saying from one of my fav movies, "A River Runs Through It", not sure exactly how it went, but here goes; "two things we werer never for, fishing and church". I'd like to add hunting into that line as well.
