I have seriously considering abandoning hunting in tn for the possibility of saving for a hunt in another state. I have always hunted in tn and enjoyed ample numbers of doe kills, but I really never have seen a B&C size animal. The leases I have been on have been less than desirable. The land that I have permission to hunt has lots of deer, but no sizeable bucks. I do not want to really quit hunting tn. I know there are some nice bucks in tn, but they are few and far between. I also know that you are not guaranteed to see or kill a big buck on a hunt. What are your opinions on this dilemma? I need to hear some other points of view on this matter.

If antler size is all you are concerned about, then, yes, it is definetly worth looking into another state.

There are big deer in almost all parts of TN. Your chances may be better in another state, if you can save enough to go there and put your time in, or hire an outfitter. however, one thing is for sure. Abandoning hunting is not the way to kill a big deer. You can't kill them unless you are in the woods.
My brother in law thought an out of state hunt was the answer too. He is several thousand dollars porrer now with nothing to show for his money, and still admires the mounts I have on the wall, killed right here in Tennessee, on public land.

I came to that conclusion a few years back , I buy a license in Ky, Ohio, and Ill, I hate to spend the money and time away from home but I too wanted to have a chance at a larger racked deer. I still love the family time with my brothers here at home!

a B&C in any state is unlikely no matter what you see on TV. They are far and few between.

You can certainly see B&C on any good managed farm in IllInois. A friend of mine owns 2 farms in Pike co. that Hadley Creek leases from him. On a 3 day hunt you could very well see 1-3 B&C. Getting them in range for your bow and actually making a good shot... well that would be more along the lines of unlikely. The odds of killing a B&C is not in your favor when free range hunting but the odds of actually seeing one would be very good if your with the right outfit in a big buck state. Especially if its a rut or very late season hunt.Check out TN deer registry--there are many good Booners on the list. Good luck and stick with the good old Vol state.

Its tough going in my area for even a chance at an older buck much less b&c. I still scout hard here, but i feel my time in the woods is better spent elsewhere.

The odds against you for killing a B/C buck on public land ANYWHERE are ASTRONOMICAL. And really not much better for a P/Y buck. EVERY single year since then we STILL go there in hopes of taking a P/Y buck. We've invested LOTS of money and only one of us five has any P/Y bucks to show for the effort. Though ALL of us have had GREAT and rewarding times every season. And ALL of us have seen or had shots at a P/Y buck at one time or another.
Interestingly enough, the LARGEST scoring buck taken in that time by any of the five came from right here in Tn. and grossed 168 and change (ALMOST B/C). CRAZY!!!
I found out several things in my journey since 1999, the bucks we hunt up north are bigger, have better racks, and are almost always DUMBER than their (similar racked, NOT similar aged) conter part down South. Mainly because bucks down here just take more years to grow the same size rack. Therefore they are older, smarter and MUCH harder to kill...generally speaking. This realization hits home to all of us who have spent muliple years in the PUBLIC, Tn. deer woods.
I also came to the realization that I REALLY neede to work on my skills to match witts with really mature bucks.ANYWHERE.
So what does it mean to kill a "trophy" deer?
NOTHING to anyone except the person who kills it and maybe a few close friends.
REAL, HONEST, self satisfaction for me comes from killing ANY mature public land deer...buck or doe.
There are MANY mature deer in Tennessee. They may not have HUGE racks, but they take just as much, if not more skill to kill.

So you're really going to give up a whole season of hunting in your home state in order to go on one out-of-state hunt? Good luck with that. Hope you kill what you are after. I'll be spending three months matching wits with some fine Tennessee deer and enjoying the challenge of figuring out how to kill 'em.

I have a friend in North Carolina who saves his money every year and goes to Saskatchewan. Some years he books 10 day hunts.Doesnt fool around anywhere else.He has killed some awsome bucks but no B&C.
I have hunted Kentucky for 15 years and have only seen 1 that would go B&C.It was a non-typical.
Anyone that tells you you can go to Illinois and see 1-3 B&Cs on a 3 day hunt is very mistaken.
Good luck and chase your dreams where ever they may take you.
