I truly believe the root to 95% of all problems is a lack of communication. Maybe the land owner should have called you first to see if you were going to lease the land. Or maybe you should have checked with him in June or July and worked out an agreement for this year. Not wait until the end of August. just sayin.

That sucks man! Good luck. I think the ones who offered him double to cut you out are just as sorry as the landowner. Why? Desired commodities go to the highest bidder. That's the American way. You right but i didnt get a chance to bid.
That's what I was gonna say. You never knew it was being bid on. Sorry to hear that happend to you . I will keep my eyes/ears on for you.

I'm gonna say it like it was. We did everything for this guys dad. When his dad passed away we went and paid our respects and talked to the son who now owns it . I asked him was he gonna let us keep leasing it and he said yes that no one in his family hunted so it wouldn't be no problem. He told us to keep coming to pay it on opening day of squirrel season. I gave him 4 phone numbers and asked him if anything changes to call me and he said that was fine. He shook my hand and we went on our way. We then drove to the ground as always and made sure no one had been throwing trash out. We always keep it clean. Never had a problem with them our the neighbors the son was just greedy he could have called me

Absolutely, it would have been nice if the landowner had given you a chance to bid on it. If he's a greedy guy, I can't see why he wouldn't have taken the opportunity to maximize his profits.

That's a bummer. I lost a long-standing lease several years ago when the heirs to the property took possession. We had done everything to maintain good relations with the original landowners, but they had different plans. Sometimes it just happens. You'll find somewhere else and never look back.
That said, I agree with others that maintaining a friendly relationship in and out of hunting season is the key. Everyone prefers to deal with people they like and trust. Takes more than dropping off a check once a year to build that relationship. Not saying anything about you or your relationship, just sayin'...
