That sucks man! Good luck. I think the ones who offered him double to cut you out are just as sorry as the landowner. Why? Desired commodities go to the highest bidder. That's the American way.
You right but i didnt get a chance to bid.

I disagree. Landowner should have reqested more end of story. He should have gave you the fires right of refusal on te lease if you were on good terms and it sounds as if you were if he was sick if you offered him $1000.00.

I'm going to agree with BSK. We now find out that the land is not owned by the same person that you had been leasing it from. Only leased it for 1 year from current owner. Also you never talked to the new owner to secure the property for the future so maybe he thought you was no longer going to lease it.
I think it is sad when a landowner is called sorry for making a business decision and doing what he wants with his property. If you were willing to pay that much more for the land and didn't then maybe the son thought you were taking advantage of an old man.
Sure it is all about money. How many pay raises have you turned down or offered to give back when the economy got bad? What makes you special to the new owner that he should give up money for you? What you did for the old man was for the old man not the new owner. Unless it is a friend almost everybody will put money first in most situations.

I truly believe the root to 95% of all problems is a lack of communication. Maybe the land owner should have called you first to see if you were going to lease the land. Or maybe you should have checked with him in June or July and worked out an agreement for this year. Not wait until the end of August. just sayin.

Its not always all about the money..Every piece of private ground I have ever hunted was strictly thru a one to one personal relatrionship with the land owner..I have never handed over cash to hunt, except for semi public dove feilds...
Almost every one of the people that I hunt on have turned down offers to be paid for the hunting rights... They just don't like or care for the folks that approach them about leasing for one reason or the other...If they did they would probably just let you hunt for nothing. They don't want to be obligated if they just decide to cut it off for any reason or no reason at all...They don't want money to stand in the way of any of thier decisions or infringe on thier personal business (and some thier personal business can be questionable)....they are good folks, just kind of funny that way I guess...Almost everyone of them has told me that they can tell when somebody drives onto their place what they are there for and that when they step the first foot out of the vehicle they have made up thier mind as to whether they like them or not before they even say a word....
One of the first tips I give to people knocking on doors looking for permission to hunt is don't look like a deer hunter before your intentions are even know... leave the camo at home...If you are going to ask a roman permission to hunt his place you need to dress and know how to converse like a roman...just sayin

i get my lease pretty darn cheap. and we've been leasing from our farmer for 10+ years. we take care of the land and keep it clean and even help the farmer with some of his duties. each year the first deer that hits the ground gets processed and goes to him. hell, he gets Christmas cards from every member of our club.
2 years ago some neighbors offered him more money and let's face it... times are tough for a lot of people. we gladly matched they're offer and we're all happy.
not saying you weren't a respectable leasee at all. just saying that next time you get a lease try to do some things that may be out of your way and it might help avoid this situation.
i know of some leases but they are all in Madison County. wish i could help brother.

This is the reason everyone needs a written lease! With ending and renewal dates, was you paying him the same day or week every year, or even the same month? If your on this site much you know people have been talking about losing leases for months, no different than paying your monthly house payment or rent. Hate it for you but its really a business deal than you were in, too many treat the landowner bad at the same time, At BSK had a point $300 a year and now you will pay $1,000?? were you under paying?
