With the price hunting property leases going through the roof all i hear is how i lost my lease.I hunt in Kentucky and its always the rich guys from Georgia or Florida have leased my farm that i've hunted for years.Well i got news for you .Those guys are just like most of us.They work hard for their money.The ones i know are brick layers,beer routemen,small business owners or work in retail sales for someone else.Yes some are doctors and lawyers but most are middleclass.They love deer hunting and have taken the step that must be made to take larger bucks.I have seen some drive up in 20 year old trucks pulling 30 year old campers and i wonder how they made their journey.So dont always blame it on the rich guys.Sometimes you need to blame it on yourself for not becoming friends with your farmer or land owner.
My farmer in Christian county Kentucky owns 2200 acres that he farms.I am blessed he lets me hunt 4 farms that equal about 600 acres.I see my farmer at least a dozen times all during the year.I stop by a Christmas and visit most every year.And you know,we very seldom talk about hunting.We talk about family and farming and whats new in the community.The local folks in the small town of Lafayette all know me and my truck.I have made many new friends there over the last 20 years.Thats the idea i am getting here.Make friends with your land owners not just come around come hunting season.
Every now and then i drop a hint about hunting someones farm and 99% of the time its always someone else hunts it.But one of these days it will pay off with another p-lace to hunt.
Money from hunting leases is a drop in the bucket to most large farmers.Every year my friend has many many people try to lease his property and he tells them all "no thank you'He tells me its cause of a few of his friends and relatives would have no place to hunt if he leased it out.
I have friends who have figured it out also.They lease 1100 acres near Cadiz.Real prime hunting land.$10 dollars an acre,thats cheap for this property.They leave a nice camper there year round and visit often.They do some serious cooking most every week-end and the farmer and his helpers all join in.They and their farmer all have a good time.The farmer knows he has good folks hunting and taking care of his property.He likes them and doesnt want anyone else on his property for any amount of money.I know for a fact he has been offered $30 an acre and turned it down so my friends can hunt.
So what i'm saying is.Make friends not just a business partner.

I could'nt agree more! I have more private land in NC to hunt than I could ever hunt. Myself and 2 others have access to 5 farms and we lease them all.
Not one single farm did we have to ask for permission, all land was from an invitation by the landowner, whether it be helping haul silage on a dairy or hauling a load of round bales when the guys were hurting for hay. All of our landowners are now our friends. Too many deer hunters go in "balls to the wall" when asking for permission and it turns the landowners off. In the last 6 years I can count on one hand how many times deer hunting has been in our conversations with landowners. Sometime deer hunting should be the least important thing when trying to get permission to deer hunt....if that makes sense.
We probably pissed a few people off cause there were others hunting the properties when we took over, but the landowners did'nt care and all they say is, "I don't care about ol so and so, he never comes around cept for deer season or unless he's askin to hunt."

This is spot on.Most land owners what to talk about anything but deer.They rather you help a little,give a gift,& just listen.Upkeep for a land owner is high.Taxes,insurance and upkeep are sky high.The money from a lease is small % of help.

we own land here in Tn. I dont have time to keep up now,,
right now at this point in time I have much more to deal with than a Ky deer,,and I am not worried about anybody from anywhere that has the money and TIME to go,,more power to ya if you do.

when u have hunters who lease land then they suddenly think its there land and they can do what they want..they ride 4 wheelers all over,shoot the farmers dogS for chasing THERE DEER..leave there trash all over the place..thats why land is so hard to fine now i call it SLOOPY HUNTERS..OR ELMERS

Thats exactly what i'm talking about.Thats why the farmer either closes it to everybody or just lets friends hunt.Make friends with him and treat him like you would want to be treated and you usually will have a place to hunt forever.

Pretty good post. I dont care if some hunter paid me 20 dollars an acre for everything I own. That money still wouldnt make a dent in expenses, being good people is much more important.

I agree with having a good relationship with the owner & treating his property as your own , goes along way .
