My guess is copperhead or spreadin adder (not sure about spelling) I's say you're right. Here's a google image of a Spreading Adder aka Hognose snake

Hognosed snake it is. These guys are super cool. They do the puff adder "Billy Bad Snake" bluff and if that doesn't work, they roll over, soil themselves, and play dead. You can flip them right side up, and they will roll right back over and play dead. They also come in a black variety.

pretty sure it is a hognosed snake, did it hiss and shake it's tail when you startled it? That is a common tactic.
