I prefer them laying down. Takes me about two minutes to fd one. I use an old knife and a rock or hammer on the pelvis and brisket. Less work and less chance of cutting the organs.

Here's a tip some might not know about. Spread the hind legs wide after splitting pelvis. Put one foot on each leg and pull up on tail. Opens them up wide.

Unless requested to do otherwise, I fd them where they fall as quickly as I can.

I do em on the ground too, with the head shoulders and back up hill just a bit if the ground lays right...most of the time right where they fall...

I disagree and much prefer to gut them on the ground!
I saw and split the pelvic bone, cut the diaphram on either side and reach up and cut the windpipe. I then actually peel everything inside them from top to bottom, absolutely nothing left in them, absolutely clean as a pin from top to bottom in about 2 minutes or less.
I have saw people waste 10 minutes gutting a deer and make a mess, its really not that hard and most people make way too big a deal of it!

Ditto ! Kenbob how do you do it ?

With a set of nose plugs. And normally if Jake is with me I don't do it at all.
In all reallity it is getting harder for me to get down and gut one now.

I don't have any trouble getting down. It is getting up I have a problem with.

It's a struggle for me with both BW.

Why split the pelvis? Hung up by the back legs, cut everything away in the chest cavity and abdomen, then cut around the anus--everything falls out in one big pile right into the bucket in front of the deer. Extremely clean...

I've never sawed the pelvis while field dressing. The gut hooks are a great tool and really help with the while process. There are some that have a plastic guard to keep from puncturing anything while unzipping.

I use one of those Wyoming knife gut hook tools. And a fixed blade for the gutting.

I just gut them on the ground. I takes me a few minutes to do it. Maybe I'm just rusty, or just slow. \:D
