I'm a firm believer that there are dominate or preferred mast trees even when there is an abundance of acorns throughout the woods. I've seen deer pass through areas loaded with dropping acorns and good acorns on the ground to head to a particular tree or group of trees in a different location. They may pick up 1 or 2 along the way but they know where they're headed and unless they're spooked that's where they're going. Usually this is a really large, old tree or group of them but no older or larger than the ones they may pass on the way. The ground will usually be torn up underneath from all the pawing through the leaves and litter and you can literally scoop buckets of deer droppings. I don't know what the difference in acorns is. The south slope theory doesn't hold water because they pass those bearing trees on southern slopes and it doesn't make any difference whether they're located near or far from water. I haven't seen this in every set of woods I've hunted but in some and enough times to know it holds true. Whatever those acorns have that the others don't is purely magic. That's the seed acorns people ought to be planting.

Just get a little hang-time.... one will walk by.... If not enjoy the great outdoors.... DITTO... Don't Stress it, Enjoy it and you will eventually be rewarded.
This is the attitude I'm taking this year. My leases are so far away that I don't have time or $$$ to really seriously monitor or scout my land or hunt one buck in particular. That being said years of experiance have added up. So my take on it is: Hunt the food and the terrain, do the best you can to get in and out conspicuously and have a good time. Because during the rut if you're sitting in a good funnel you have no idea what could come down the trail.

Last year we were loaded with acorns and i didnt have time to scout and my buddy said i have found some sign and he hunted one ridge and i hunted the next ridge. He killed one opening morning and the next morning. He saw deer constantly and i saw nada and i was maybe 75 yards away. AFter the second day i made a big walk and moved about 100 yards to a big whiteoak that had lots of droppings under it. I killed two in the next two days. Then that spot was done. Early in the year fifty yards in the wrong area is the difference to seeing them or not.

If you are more than 30 yards from fresh deer droppings during bow season, statistically, you're wasting your time. Will you get lucky sometimes and kill a deer? Sure, but not consistently.

In a good acorn year, you cannot put your foot down in the woods in my area without stepping on deer poop. It is everywhere.
