You know a mature buck is using the area you hunt. I would hunt him opening week and if I didn't get him , I would stay out of there until NOV. I believe I only hurt my chances if I stay after him, unless the property is large enough that I can hunt the perimeters.

I would have to stay out till ML or rifle season myself, as I'm not near good enough bowhunting to stay after a wiley mature buck with a bow. I have to have the added shot distance advantage myself, over possibly stinking him out of the area altogether trying to get close enough with a bow. ;\)

You'll never kill him with a bow if you don't try! Best time of the year to hunt is bow season (IMO, of course).

Weather permitting-opening day of bow season.

My thoughts exactly.

I think Bow Season is the best time to hunt too. I don't know what it is about October, but I see more deer in October than any other month when I'm hunting.

Mature bucks move most in daylight (during hunting season) at two different times--the first week or two of bow season and the week before peak breeding.

I have mixed feelings about this one and I'll try to explain.

Reasons to hunt him with archery equipment:
1)In West TN where I deer hunt I think mature bucks are more easily patterned during early bow season as they are still on the summer feeding routine and there has been minimal human pressure in the woods.
2)Many mature bucks change their range considerably late October which means if you "save him" there is a good chance he wont be in the same location he was in early September, and if he is he will be nocturnal.
3)I videoed two magnum bucks in the last few years (4.5+ 150"+) and convinced myself to "save them" to November, only to have both of them shot by another hunter with archery equipment. Unfortunately, neither one was ever recovered by the archery hunters; one was never found and the other was harvested by a fellow hunter with a gun later in the year.

Reasons not to hunt him with archery:
1)I practice alot and shoot does routinely, but I often question myself with archery equipment once the distance exceeds 30 yards and a mature buck is added to the equation. Can you say Buck fever!
2)I have never had the opportunity at a mature buck with a bow so I cannot say for sure but I bet "buck fever" might get the best of me with him standing there at 20 yards, especially if he is nervous like a lot of wild mature bucks are when they are that close to humans. Because of this, I have traditionally stayed out of these areas until I can get a weapon in my hands to increase my odds (MZ or Gun), however, this method has never paid off for me.

In conclusion, I have just about talked myself out of "saving" mature bucks for MZ or gun because it has been my experience that they are not there in November for a myriad of reasons, some stated above. I think I'll take Pursuit Hunter's advice and give'em a whirl this archery season if the opportunity presents itself.

Id give it a shot early season, not more than once or twice.
