The Rock's post set me to thinking about too much gear. So much of the stuff peddled in the various outdoor catalogs I get bombarded with is just plain unnecessary. My deer hunting equipment is fairly basic. I try to keep things simple. Bow/Rifle, arrows/ammo, stand (sometimes), backpack with knife, flashlight (rarely used), snacks, water, toilet paper, a length of cord, a sweat rag, matches, and sometimes a book. Hunting clothes, hat, and boots round out the equipment I need.
Gps, atv, rangefinder, cell phone ( never had one), calls, scents, and sundry other gadgets seem like they would just complicate things.
What dou some of you consider to be needless gadgetry?

Im in the same boat as you,but I do take my cellphone for emergency and also,i'd lose alot of arrows and miss alot of deer if it weren't for my rangefinder during bow season..LOL But other than that,im right there with you..I can carry all my gear in a Fanny pack that I bought when I was 16 from cabelas..Works very well..I tried carrying a back pack, but it just gets to bulky..I mean your hunting deer for a couple hours, not going on a wilderness elk hunt in the rockies..LOL

After my post, I started cleaning mine out. So far, here's what's being left out this year: PB crackers (pretty sure these last forever though) Deer grunt tube Fresh earth scent Gum (who chews gum???) An entire box of .300 Win mag shells (guess I was worried about pirates or something) Broadhead sharpener (that's where it was!!) 2 knives (had 3 in there) Batteries (extra for GPS and flashlight) Duct tape (might be a redneck Colored lens covers for flashlight (I have never once used them) The can call
You know what, I'm just gonna leave it all in there and not take it with me...I can get by with a cellphone, a knife in a sheath and my bow and stand.
So to ammend my first post, if you see a guy in his late thirties wearing joggin pants and a t-shirt wandering around in the middle of nowhere in the dark, don't fear. Just trying to get cell phone service

I'm guilty of taking too much stuff in the woods too. This year I will probly take the same stuff as I always do because I do like to be prepared, but most of it will stay in the truck or at the cabin.
I usually take all of my "after the kill" stuff in the woods with me, but its really not necesarry. I think this year I'll just tag it and come back to gut and drag. That way i can get in something cooler and not sweat up my hunting duds. I'm thinking about leavin the calls at home too. I haven't called much but when I do I think it hurts more than it helps. I'll be down to:
Back up release compass small bow hook (because I switch trees often) extra saftey strap.(the portion that goes on the tree) flash light(extra batteries) water Snack lighter tp pruning shears optics range finder MAYBE a thermacell
past that I'll have the stuff I carry everyday
cell phone knife wallet and baccer

I too carry a fanny pack only, unless its really cold and then I carry my heavy out layers if I have a long walk. The essentials are all I carry as well. My fanny pack consists of: Knife and folding double blade saw. Drag rope, tiny pair of channel locks, palm size rangefinder, 2 small flashlights for tracking, releae/bullets depending on season. Lighter, pen, used to carry radio but now use cell phone most the time if needed. Wind checker, grunt call.

I can remember the days carrying a 35 lb tree lounge and a 25 lb back pack through the woods for miles... I think the older I have gotten, the smarter I have become... I now carry a much lighter tree stand (Summit) and now only a fanny pack..... My hunting partners used to think I was crazy.... Now looking back, they were right....

Pretty Much the essentials and my rangefinder.
I carry it all in a backpack but its 5 lbs max, I guess everybody has a preference on what they should or shouldn take...

weapon, knife, flashlight.
That's it.
Scents, calls etc., proved to be a waste of my money. Took me about twenty years to figure that out, but it made no diff. in the number of deer I saw or killed.

I too was guilty of carrying way too much gear when I first started. I remember my first season hunting when I drew oak ridge. I carried my stand, crossbow, and backpack, which all totaled 75 lbs, 2 miles in too my spot! I now pack much lighter if I have to carry a stand in. My stand now weighs 18 lbs, bow 6 lbs and and all day sit pack weighs 10 tops. In that pack is a small bottle of scent killer, grunt tube, 2 sandwiches, 2 packs of crackers, water, flashlight, dragging rope, tinks (I never leave home without it), butt out (that things the stuff) and my journal.

I'm as guilty as the next guy of not only carrying what I need but what I "might" need as well. Sometimes I'm glad I have it...sometimes I'm not. I usually trim that list down as the season progresses.

I don't take more than a fanny pack and if I'm hunting the same spot in the evening I leave everthing in the tree. Including my bow. And no, I won't devulge where I hunt.

I always have a gerber saw and pruner combo cause i never know when going in some places whether i will have to prune a limb or two with my climber....i sometimes hunt at random a place i have before hand scouted but not identified an exact tree. I have certain things i place in my fanny and i swear that i dont think i could carry one more!

Cant stand the bulky feeling of the pockets.....use a fanny pack. i get the ones with about 10 to 12 pockets and i can place what i need in them and then just hang the fanny pack with in easy reach. Has worked well for me and i think everyone finds their level of comfort someway. i have one i use specifically for MZ....same things overall but that way i dont have to do any switching around.

Most of the big deer get killed by jokers with nothing but a Q-beam, truck keys, and a 12 pack. Maybe I do carry too much stuff!

Why in the hell does anyone "need" a cell phone while hunting? Well, if you fall and break your leg in 2 or 3 places, it would be nice to have a way to "call" for help. Or if you fall out of a treestand and get stuck in your harness, or if you didn't wear a harness and your back is broken, you get bit by a rattlesnake, you shoot yourself, someone else shoots you,a bear mauls you, a deer gores you, and hog severs your femoral artery, you slip and slice your self open while field dressing an animal....my question is why the hell wouldn't you need a cell phone while hunting?

Before the cell phone days, looking back, I wish they were invented earlier. Been in a few situations back in the 60's and 70's, that would have saved alot of grief, if we had a cell phone.
I know of several cases where lives have been saved in the last 10 years, because someone had a cell phone. All while hunting or fishing.
