That all depends on how good you are at placing trail-cams!

In addition, a spotlight doesn't work as well as people think. When the TWRA was testing thermal imagers against a spotlight, I believe the number was that the spotlight only saw around 20% of the deer the thermal imager did.

As a kid we use to do it all the time. It was kind of fun. I don't think if it was legal it would tempt people to night hunt if they were not all ready planning on doing it. But it might make law enforcement harder to catch the real bad guys so I am glad its in place.

I wonder how the TWRA "looks" for deer?

I do believe they use thermal images!

And here's what they look like.

No light is cast upon them making them easy to collect data from. All for the low price of $10,000 per camera.

I saw the article the TWRA put out on the thermal imaging of deer. I must say I am amazed at how the imager can pick up antler in so much detail. That tells me that there is some sort of heat radiating up/around there.

The thermal imager is picking up the warm blood flowing through the velvet antlers. However, about right now, blood stops flowing through the velvet in preparation for antler velvet shedding, and in response, suddenly the thermal imagers won't be able to see the antlers anymore. Thermal imagers can only pick up the antlers while they are in velvet and blood is flowing through the velvet--basically, the summer months.

Agree, and night vision binoculars work great!
Just be sure you don't have any guns with you in the vehicle. If you have a carry permit, better leave it at home.

I knew the imager could pick up the bucks in velvet and thought it couldn't when the velvet dropped, but I was thinking a video or pictures in one of the articles was done during the fall some time. Bucks were moving mostly at night and they had some GIANTS. The spotlight didn't even pick the deer up as they would lay down in the high grass. Then the imagers would see them.
