The European Hornet is very aggressive, and often lives on colonies of hundreds in trees. The Cicada killer is a solitary insect that lives in holes in the ground and not very aggresive. However, the Cicada wasp is absolutely HUGE! They are North America's largest hornet.

Yellow-jackets are wimps compared to the red paper wasp! Most aggressive wasps/hornets I've ever encountered.

i will have to respectfully disagree.
there is a little yellow-faced yellow paper wasp that is a mean little devil. but yellowjackets are still the worst. \:\)

I've stepped on a typical yellow jacket nest and as unpleasant as those stings were--I've never encountered anything like being attacked by those souped up little kamikazee humminbirds (the european hornets) at Big South Fork. I kept watch on my buddy to make sure he didn't lapse into anaphylactic shock after his two stings. He said they still hurt a week later.

If you disturb a yellow-jacket nest, they ARE coming after you, and they aren't going to give up! I've never seen any other hornet that will pursue an intruder as long and as far as yellow-jackets. However, you don't even have to disturb the red paper-wasps to get them coming after you in full force. Just walk near the nest. In addition, yellow-jackets sings really burn, but only for awhile. Whatever's in the red paper-wasps sting is mighty strong, as a sting on the arm or leg will cause it to swell up twice its normal size, and hurt for days.

Now from what I've been told NOTHING tops the sting of a European Hornet. I've talked to loggers who have been stung just once or twice and they were very physically ill--cold chill, nausea, diziness, etc.

I saw a youtube video where they ranked the top ten deadliest snakes based on the potency of their venom (some type of sea snake was the deadliest if you're curious). Wonder if anything similar has been done for stinging critters.

A little more on the yellow jacket pursuit comment. I was with my family when I was about 10 yrs or so old and we were walking in the Savage Gulf Natural Area. As we walked along, my Dad noticed an ax handle sticking out of the ground, well, to make a long story longer, he pulled it out...man what a mistake! Some jack hole had plunged that handle into the hole of a yellow jacket nest! All I remember hearing was my Dad yelling RUN! Well I ran alright, and I made it into the clear.....until I heard my Dad once again yelling at me to GET BACK HERE RIGHT NOW AND GET THESE BEES OFF YOUR MOTHER AND BROTHER! I went back alright, and surprisingly still made it thru w/o a sting. I can still remember trying to dig those things out of my Mother's "bee-hive" hairdo! \:D
