There was an interesting study done in Missouri several years ago that tracked bucks during hunts on a WMA. What they found was really interesting. The younger bucks were easily displaced by human activity, making them visible. The older, mature bucks quickly learned out of the way places that hunters overlooked, and they hunkered down, allowing hunters to walk by. They also found that once these bucks located the areas hunters did not frequent, they stayed there.

I've also read more than one article thqt says that is can be VERY difficult to do accurate jaw bone aging for MOST hunters/Officials where deer are at ot above the age of 5.5.
I have KNOWN of several deer aged that were missed by as much as TWO years at AEDC checking station in years past (before WES). I KNEW for certain the age of several of the deer after I left the station and removed the jaw bone to be aged by another more experienced biologist.
I also believe that body shape and skin/face characteristics can be valuable tools in assessing age.
For example, there is NO doubt that the picture shown by bowriter is NOT that of a 1-3 year old buck.

True- I believe he was about 7-8 when that was taken. He hung around the house since the day he was fawned. For a while, when he was real young, Jeanne would feed him turnips. As he got over 2, I made her quit and made her stay away from him. I never saw breed or even chase a doe. In fact, he ignored all other deer. And I never found one of his sheds.

11.5 killed with traditional gear very impressive!
That's Grant Woods' kill with a Black Widow recurve. He crawled on his belly for hundreds of yards to shoot this bedded buck from 15 feet. He got the whole stalk and kill on video tape too!
I feel it is easier to kill older deer in the north than in the south.
Without question it is easier to kill mature bucks (or any deer for that matter) in the Midwest than the "big hardwoods" of the South. When 90+% of the habitat is open agricultural fields or grasslands, deer movement patterns are highly decipherable and predictable. Now in the big woods of the South, deer don't really have patterns. They can be anywhere on any given day.

Your North/South comment caught my eye. On a related issue, for some reason, deer farther also move more in lots of wind, and also seem to react to string noise than our Southern deer. I have killed more deer right where I was aiming up North, than down South. Seems the Southern deer drop much quicker at the release.

The older a deer is the more tooth-wear aging under-ages the deer. By the time tooth-wear indicates 5 1/2 years old, most deer are actually older than that by 1 to 2 years.
The buck I posted a picture of had tooth-wear that indicated he was 7 1/2 years old. But cementum annuli indicated 11 1/2 years old. I would bet the cementum annuli age was closer to the truth.

On the tooth-wear topic bsk or anyone else...
Do you think there are any differences on tooth wear from northern deer to southern deer? For example maybe a northern deer eats a lot more standing and cut crops for the majority of his diet where the southern deer gets a large portion of harder nuts such as acorns etc? Do you think this could speed the wear of the teeth on a southern deer and decrease the wear of them on a northern deer to some degree?

Diet can have a great influence on toothwear.
