just to be sure - the rut period for middle TN is usually around the 2nd and 3rd week of November?

That depends on what part of Middle TN you are in. In and north of Nashville, peak breeding is the earliest in the state, with peak dates usually falling around Nov. 8-12. Traveling south, west and east of Nashville the dates get later. 45 miles south, east and west of Nashville peak dates are generally closer to November 15-20.

Do you think the difference has to do with where the deer that were brought in to repopulate the area came from? I.e., Wisconsin deer to the north of Nashville, Texas and North Carolina deer elsewhere.

I'm always amazed that when I go just an hour and a half away to northeastern Alabama, the deer don't go into the rut until January. I'm told it's because the deer in that area were repopulated with deer from southern Alabama.

Surely that January rut in North AL is the 2nd rut. I hunt in North Mississippi quite a bit and last year's rut hit around Thanksgiving, though, typically its the 1st week of December. I can't imagine North AL being a month behind when we're talking about the same relative latitude.

No, just part of the Natural Selection process. Whatever birth times are best for fawn survival become genetically ingrained into the local population.

If deer restocking drove local breeding times, we would see a hodge-podge of different dates all over the place, with no rhyme or reason. Yet what we actually see is a smooth transition of dates with distance--the sure sign this is a natural process.

Honestly, I think the deer of TN carry very few expressed genetic traits from the restocked deer. The genetic traits that are best adapted to the local environment will always win out over genetics from a very different geographic location.

It's all about local adaptations.

The map at this link shows the breeding dates for MS. Notice how they transition smoothly from northwest to southeast across the state, constantly getting later towards the southeast:

http://www.mdwfp.com/Level2/Wildlife/Game/Deer/deer_breeding.asp

But the January breeding dates in North AL are real. The big question is, why? What conditions change over just 20-30 air-miles that would favor fawn birthing dates more than two months difference over such a short geographic difference?

That's very interesting, BSK. I've looked at that chart before, but not from this perspective. Its interesting that there's that green pocket in NE MS on the AL line that doesn't hit until January -the same as the Gulf Coast.

That map is cool BSK. Do you know if there is one made like that for TN? (I'm sure if there was, we would be talkin about that a WHOLE LOT on here \:D )
