thats what i have been told but i really dont ever see much rutting at all in my area i only see small bucks pestering does never really chasing or nothing like that
The ruts always stale around here too. Never pay that much attention to when its supposed to be anymore, see very little rut activity anyway so why worry when its here or when its not not,i just hunt.

I saw bucks chasing last year in late October early November in Mid TN last season, but it was just the little guys. Just 45 miles west of Nashville in Hickman Co it was around the second weekend of ML and they were just getting started.

Just 45 miles west of Nashville in Hickman Co it was around the second weekend of ML and they were just getting started. Yup, its always a little later in Hickman County . I have found that the best times to be in the woods at our place is November 8th - 20th.....Kinda broad, but if I had to guess a couple of days, I'd say Nov 10th-15th (6 day period). Then again in mid-late December.
What's really strange about Hickman County is how different peak dates can be in the northern part of the county than the southern.

That's very interesting, BSK. I've looked at that chart before, but not from this perspective. Its interesting that there's that green pocket in NE MS on the AL line that doesn't hit until January -the same as the Gulf Coast.
Poser,
I have a client in far southern TN just across the line from that part of MS. He actually sees a double rut, probably due to the mixing of genetics from north and south. He will see a rut in late November (TN genetic influence) and then another rut in January (MS genetic influence).

That map is cool BSK. Do you know if there is one made like that for TN? (I'm sure if there was, we would be talkin about that a WHOLE LOT on here )
Nope, none exists. But I could create a generic version, at least from the Plateau and to the west. Breeding dates in Eastern TN are a mystery to me.

wlf89,
The intensity of daylight rutting activity is usually driven by two factors: 1) the adult sex ratio; and 2) the buck age structure.
The closer the adult sex ratio is to being balanced, the more intense the daylight rutting activity will be. More competition between bucks for available does forces more daylight chasing. Having a fair number of older to mature bucks also increases competition and daylight chasing.

I would like to see that generic version! In Scott County, the week of Thanksgiving is when I have seen the most rut activity.
BSK, what info do you have concerning the plateau?
