Yes sir--larvae, regardless of it is hornet or wasp is one of the best trout baits out there!!

For those that get stung you can use meat tenderizer for almost instant relief, or a aspirin will work also.

I camped at Big South Fork two weekends ago. At night, in a rainstorm, while cooking dinner we got attacked by a SWARM of huge yellow jacket things. My buddy, a wildlife biology major when he was in school, said that they were cicada killers. He said it was strange because they normally were loners and didn't come out at night. He got stung twice and we killed 8 or 9 of them. Upon further study online once we got back--he declared them an invasive species known as European Hornets. They looked like big a** yellow jackets to me and were meaner than a snake.

Did they look like this? A couple years ago my son and I stopped our four wheelers to look around and I heard what I thought was a tractor running in the distance. Turns out it was these guys in the bottom of a big white oak about ten feet away. Got out of there with a couple photos and no stings.

Yes or maybe. or who knows. Cicada killers and European Hornets look almost identical. Their behavior is slightly different. The European hornet is supposedly more aggressive. Cicada killers tend to be loners and kill specifically cicadas. They sting them and take the stunned/dead bug back to their lair where they lay an egg in their head and then the larval cicada killer has food as a new hatch. Hornets act aggressively if their nest is intruded upon and they often live in hollow trees. (all what my biology guru friend told me anyway)
