What the odds are for a buck making it past 5.5 and dying of old age in a average hunted area. I know this stat is not achievable, what would be your guess.
I often wonder, because we hear all the time of big bucks being sighted and captured on film, never to be seen again or heard of anyone killing them. It seems that deer that do live past 5.5 in a hunted area, become a "phantom" of the woods. In realistic terms........a very different kind of deer.
I suspect and guess, that a very old buck does not move very much, even during the rut because of hormones.....and probably more importantly.......because they know when and where to move.

Actually he doesn't have to reach 5.5. The last figures I saw were something like 92% of all bucks over 3.5 die of something besides a hunter killing them. I believe the study was done at Auburn.

I have had 2 different deer, one here and one in Miss which were virtually unkillable. They both reached ages around 8.5 before totally vanishing. The only way we knew they were around was trail cams and an occasional post season shed. The deer here lived on 500 acres, and was never seen other then by trail cam. Pretty amazing really.

If many bucks live past 5 1/2, they don't move around much. I can get plenty of trail-cam pictures of 5 1/2 year-old bucks. But pictures of 6 1/2+ bucks are virtually non-existent.

I think it depends heavily on the type of habitat they are living in. If there is plenty of heavy escape/bedding cover they have a much better chance. In areas where heavy cover is sparse or limited they will have a tougher time being invisible all their adult lives.

I've seen in a few in very sparsely populated areas (few roads) that have lived to 11 or 12 years old.
I know of a doe from the Plateau that was 19 1/2 when killed.
