Last year in Michigan, 305,000 archery hunters spent 4.4 million days in the field, an average of 14.2 days each. By contrast, 630,000 firearms hunters spent 4.3 million days in the woods, an average of 6.8 days.

That bolsters my long-held belief that archery hunters tend to take the sport more seriously. Admittedly, archery hunters have a much longer season in which to get out, but 20 years of wandering around Michigan during the firearms season has convinced me that that a very large percentage of gun hunters don't hunt for more than two-three days at the opening of their season, even though they are allowed 15 days of hunting.

What do you guys think? Do bowhunters when the dedication award? Or, is whitetail hunting in general just gravitating more and more in the archery direction? If so, why?

I can attest that opening day of gun season sounds like a war zone, but come Monday, it might as well be archery season again.

I believe those who archery hunt are more dedicated. Any Tom, Dick and Harry can grab a rifle and go shoot a deer. It normally takes more work to get one with a bow. I also believe whitetail hunting is gravitating more toward archery hunting. We cant control deer populations with bows but as more and more areas are developed, archery is the only option that many citizens will stand for.

Not really, gun hunters fill tags faster, thus dont/cant stay in the woods as long as the bowhunter trying to close the distance

I wonder if Eric considered how many gun hunters kill out the first weekend, as Turkinator said. In addition, many hunters go to the UP to hunt and can't afford to take more timeoff work whereas bow hunters may hunt closer to home. Certainly, dedication and favorable weather does play a role.

Growing up in rural West TN, I was exposed to no shortage of hunters who, on opening day of gun season, sat in a box stand drinking beer and shot the first deer they saw and that was hunting season. While this definition of hunting has receded significantly over the last 30 years, its popularity still surprises me.

I hunt in a club a fews years back with a guy that only gun hunted. He had 1 box stand and oening weekend he would kill 4-5 deer. There must have been 8-10 cases of empty beer cans outside his blind. needless to say he left abruptly.
