I know everyone takes huge cautions and efforts in order to be scent free.... Anyone wanna share their methods with their clothes and gear in order to get them scent free and keep them that way thruogh the season. Maybe I/we can learn some tricks off one another...

Clothes i dont feel i have any problem with. I usually wash in scent fry detergent then let hang outside rain and shine for about 2 weeks before the season then put them in a plastic air tight bag in a container....but one major question in trying to figure out is... i bought a new Warm Bag this year (much like the heater body suit) but how do i get the scent off this thing and try to keep it as scent free as possible?

Thanks guys -- Its almost here...

There is no such thing as scent-free. Anything other than normal personal hygene and laundering is a waste of time and money.

well i kinda figured that was a given... well never be "invisible" to the deer... the question was posed more as to the different pains people take to try to be as scent free as is humanly possible.. guess i need to reword it for ya...

Not really. I was just explaining that the pains I take include taking a shower when I'm dirty and washing my clothes (in Tide or whatever else my wife buys) when they are. That's it.

I'll bite:

All clothes and gear such as back packs stay in airtight bags year around when not in use. I let them hang outside for a month at the end of the summer. No cover scent.

Rubber boots are stored outside. I remove the insoles often and regularly wash them in scent free detergent when washing my other hunting clothes.
In transit, the boots go in a container.

Screw in steps and tree stands are stored outside year around.

Hunting clothes are separated into different bags -winter clothes, warm weather clothes and base layers. When I return to my truck, I place the sweaty base layers in a separate bag from my other hunting clothes to help prevent "contamination."

All hunting clothes are only worn in the field. Yes its cold when you have to change clothes and its 5 degree outside. Sometimes, I do a jumping jacks to warm up my body before I change clothes.

My bow remains in its case year around when not in use, though I leave the bow and the open case outside very frequently to make sure the case stays aired out.
I don't use a whole lot of scent killer spray, though I do spray my bow grip before heading into the field.

Basically, hunting gear is either keep airtight or outside.

Anytime I go into the field after May, I exercise scent control discipline, though I try to focus as much scouting as possible in the month of February in which case, scent control is of no concern.

I acknowledge that there is no such thing as "scent free." I have made the statement on this board before: scent control discipline is a lot of work for just a little gain, but this gain can ne the difference between getting away with a rising thermal and getting winded. This small gain can make the difference between success and failure. On this point, many agree and many disagree.

If you hunt a QDMA, highly managed area, or non-pressured deer, you can get away with far less scent control than hunting pressured deer. Deer that have had no previous negative encounters with humans will exhibit far less fear and may even be inquisitive towards humas. Highly pressured deer, on the other hand, are masters of surviving the human predator and associate all sign of humans, particularly scent, with danger. They will smell you and they will pattern you.

I have only hunted pressured deer and this is what I've learned. If I felt I could have equal success with less discipline, then I would happily go that route.

One thing I love during turkey season is not having to worry about scent control.... feels liberating and relaxing after months of precision.

Stay clean and hunt the wind, however if scent free clothing or products make you confident, use them. I have bass fished with people who would be throwing baits totaly against pattern (i.e. night colors during the bright sunlight or topwater during a jig bite!)

More times than a few I was outfished by these guys. Why?---confidence! I know this is not a fishing forum but my point is...........whatever builds your confidence

I wear scentblocker clothing. Got them cheap on eBay-- I have been busted a bunch! They are comfortable, good quality, and do make me a little confident (although I am not one who feels invisible to a nose).

Confidence= staying in a tree longer= better chance of being there when he is! Good luck!

i wash mine in scent free detergent, dry them and put them in plasic bags.

I used to hang them outside, but not anymore.....

the thing is.......no matter what you do, if a deer gets downwind of you, YOU ARE BUSTED........IMO.

Play the wind, hunt high and hope for the best...IMO.

good luck

Don't really worry about it. Wash 'em in Tide Free cause that's what wife buys. Hang outside to dry when sunny. Store in a big cedar chest cause that's where I store my hunting clothes. My stands have been in the woods for 3-4 years so I don't worry about them. Do nothing special with my boots, just put them on and wear them. Oh, I might pee on them before I head into the woods but that's all. I use no cover scents or attracting scents other than my own urine.

As a side note, I enjoy hunting more and have killed just as many deer since I quit worrying about all that stuff.
