I'm not a tree expert, but I found a bunch of Persimmons within a specific area that i was scouting today. the trees in one area are relatively close to one another. I thought i heard somewhere that if the trees are close to one another they won't produce fruit is that true?

They should already have fruit hanging on them if they are going to produce this year.

Not true..Diffrent kinds of persimons ripen at different times of the year but if they're going to have fruit this year they will all have them now. Generally they are still green this time of year some might be starting to turn orange...

I didn't see any fruit on them, but because i thought they would have fruit later, i didn't really study too much. there were some small orange ones around the bases on some of them, so they may have fruit. I know one year i found one in Nov. and it was full of them. they were reddish purple and easy to spot. they were growing around cedars and it was tough to see up in there.

There are early and late persimmons. Regardless of which variety these are, you should be able to see at least some green ones if you look closely. Early 'simmons start dropping by mid-Sept. Late 'simmons drop sometimes after a couple good frosts.

Well I found about 5 in one area 50 feet by 50 feet and the other two or three were singles within 100 yds of those.

persimmons are often close together in a patch of sorts and produce fruit just like any other persimmon tree, so the proximity of persimmons to one another does not affect its ability to produce fruit, this time of year without binoculars they are hard to see as they are green and blend in with the leaves

It absolutely is not true. Persimmons will drop fruit no matter how many are together. That being said, there are male and female persimmon trees and it is possible that whomever told you that possibly only had a group of male persimmon trees--but that in itself is doubtful. I have several persimmons around my house and on my property and by June they are loaded with marble sized fruit. They typically start dropping around mid-September. This year, they dumped a bunch of unripened fruit in July due to the heat and currently they are dropping ripe persimmons--I ate three of them this evening. \:\)

Like TnDeerGuy said, persimmon trees are either male or female and only the females produce fruit. Any fruit on a female tree will be visible with binoculars this time of year. Persimmons often grow in groups because they sprout from a common root system. When they grow that way they will usually all be the same gender - I guess they would actually be clones (not sure about that). Just because they are clumped together doesn't tell you anything about whether they will produce fruit. Binoculars will though. Here's a link to a page on my website with some more info about persimmons including a photo of green ones. http://www.pursuithunting.com/2007/09/tree-id-persimmon.html

I know what a persimmon tree looks like. The bark is unique and there were some old ones and some orange ones on the ground. It was tough to see up through the cedars to the tops of the persimmons and i assumed they would not have fruit yet. Should have broke the binos out.

i have a TON of persimmons trees on my property and i have NEVER seen deer feed on them. and i have put my time on hunting them trust me. the coyotes and coons sure seem to like em though!

i stick to scouting the oaks. find one later in the season thats dropping bombs and you're golden.

A couple years ago I hunted a spot http://www.pursuithunting.com/2008/10/acorns-vs-persimmons.html that had both persimmons and white oak acorns. The deer walked right over the persimmons to get to the acorns. On the other hand, I've killed a bunch of deer under persimmons. Bottom line, find the fresh deer droppings and you'll know where they are feeding.

To check to see if persimmons are ripe grab one off the tree and bite it getting the juice. If you can put a BB in your mouth afterward then the persimmons are ripe.

Your trees may have dropped the fruit early. There were thousands of immature persimmons around all of trees about a month ago. Now I dont see any fruit on mine.

On my property I have noticed several things regarding persimmons. Number one they have to be fermenting on the ground and very bitter tasting, also I see most activity on them at night. Also persimmons are a very secondary source--almost like a treat that they could do with, or without. Based on what I have seen I would not bet my chance of hunting a persimmon grove, instead I would find their main food source and travel routes to and from that source and hunt that instead.

Just about the opposite here. If you can find em they will be wearing them out at some time. All different types of animals will. Makes for a good show while you wait.

It has been my experience that deer don't eat persimmons every year. Some years they do and some they don't. I have seen years they tear them up,(always years with little or no hard mast). And the next year, they totally ignore them, (usually when there are lots of acorns).

I have several 'simmon trees on my place both early and late and I usually ignore them all.

The only reason i am interested in that group is they right off a huge cedar thicket that deer are bedding in and the deer have to pass them coming out of the thicket on the way to the bean field. I'm thinking they my stage before moving out into the fields.

I have a farm I hunt and kill deer under the persimmons every year
I feel very confident that I will see deer,
Evenings seem better then mornings but both have produced.
I always say show me a persimmon and I will show you a dead deer
Would much rather find a persimmon than a white oak loaded

Hey BC, if you see an orange fruit on the ground, you either have or very recently had simmons hanging in that tree. They wont lay or stay orange long!
