Got drawn for a hunt that me, my brothers and my dad have been putting in on for 3 yr. Muzzleloader hunt, late October pre-rut, 2 days. I will allow the WMA to go nameless (although it is no secret) for now just so that I can get neutral opinions. Have been on this hunt twice before (bow and rifle) with very different approaches and very different results. I have an idea as to strategy, just curious how all would approach it, and appreciate all feedback.
East TN, about 2/3-3/4 open river bottoms broken by strips and patches of hardwoods, while the rest is small, yet steep, hardwood ridges or "knobs." I will concentrate on the thicker, steep hardwood ridges b/c I enjoy the scenery, don't care too much for hunting over fields, and feel that the deer use this area as a haven from the more heavily hunted fields in the bottoms. Keep in mind that I am no trophy hunter, but a buck has to be 4 points on one side, and any 7-8 pointer is a trophy to me, as I have only killed 2 deer fitting this description up to this point. What would you look for in scouting? Specific food sources for this type of year or terrain features?
Thanks to all in advance and God Bless

Plan on being there very early, but in the hardwoods there are foodsources everywhere, as well as bedding areas. That is and was my plan on the successful hunt that I had, just trying to key in on specific suggestions... maybe a specific foodsource that they hit the most in this area, etc. Especially a specific terrain feature in the ridges to look for.

Shoot, maybe someone has some specific information on Yuchi, since this is the hunt. I'm just trying to learn more while maximizing my chances at success.

Thickest stuff you can find, get in there early stay at least until noon. I don't even know where Yuchi is but from your descrpition, that is what I would do morning and afternoon. Let everybody else have the fields.
Sounds as though you have the plan.

the fields are THE place to be. get in one of the strips of woods between the fields and you will have deer running over you. i have never even seen a deer in the "knobs".
there are very few suitable trees for climbing stands in the strips between fields. and if it's flooded as it was last year, it can be tough.

I tried this method on the bowhunt and all that I saw were hunters, no deer. The time that I hunted the "knobs" I had deer all over me all day long, but that has been 4 yrs ago. The fields are all planted in corn, which is dying and drying on the stalk, so that may or may not be a factor come October. Also, I will be using a Summit Trophy Chair, not a treestand, and will probably hike in close to a mile to get away from the hunters. There are few "thickets" in this area, but a lot of things thick enough to hide a deer or 20. I will also contact the WMA manager, Bernie Swiney, for his input.
Thanks and God Bless, Ryan
