I'm new to the Dyersburg area and am looking for some friendly advice on hunting the Chickasaw Park area this fall. Any help would be appreciated.

Mostly hardwood ridges, creek bottoms, some agriculture around the edges, especially the southern end of park. Lots of good timber, mast. The park has a decent population of deer, and turkeys, although scattered. I live about 3 miles off the park, and have been here all of my life. Years ago it had a good amount of pressure, especially from Shelby county, but now I dont see that many people anymore when I drive thru it. The office has maps of all the trails and boundaries. Hope this helps. Good luck

Tickweed is on the money with his description. I hunt within a couple miles from Chickasaw. There is definitely a possibility for a solid buck if you can put yourself in right position. Just my opinion but your best chance will be a "funnel" or edge line of clearcut (least 3 years old) during mid-Nov until about mid-Dec. Good luck.

Are you talking about the WMA or the Refuge?

I second what WRbowhunter ask. Refuge is in Ripley, WMA near Jackson. Two completely different types of hunting.

Chickasaw State Park is in Chester county, near Henderson, Tn. You stated Chickasaw PARK, so I may have misunderstood, being as you live near Dyersburg.

I hunted there several years and never had much luck other that does or scrub bucks and they were hard to pin down. I will never forget one opening morning I made the mistake of hunting there and about 30 minutes AFTER daylight it looked like the Russians had invaded wearing blaze orange. Guys walking and driving everywhere. When I left every single truck had Shelby county tags on it. Go figure. Haven't been back since and haven't heard of much success there either.

The swamp area use to be good years ago when there was alot of pressure. Deer were living in the most remote area that a hunter could find and an area that you would think twice about hunting in because of the huge headache if you were to be successful. Most trails are dead ends now with a camping area at the end. I'm not sure if you can still camping in the WMA area anymore, but there sure are alot of signs of camp fires in these area. Lots of 4-wheeler trails two. Look at the swamp areas and along the safety zones. These deer are smart and they know where they can move without someone shooting at them. Do shoot one in the safety zone but they do have a tenducey to wonder into the hunting area expecially during the rut. Be prepared to walk alot and drag even further.

Sorry about the confusion, I didn't realize there were two locations. I meant the area in the bottoms near Ripley. Sounds like I may be better off ignoring it anyways. Stinks, cause I had high hopes of some good hunting so close to all the bean fields.
