Two Good Days.
I was going through one of my journals, I think it was 2006 and came across a couple entries for two days in late October. I thought they might crank you up.
It was pleasantly cool-not cold, just cool. The hickory leaves were turning golden and reminded me of the aspens in the mountains of my elk hunting days.
The squirrels were about in numbers and about to drive me crazy. I had about quit paying them any attention and concentrated on the fence crossing I had my stand facing. I saw her jump the fence and knew exactly where she was going. The old Champion bow was in my hand the Thunderhead 125, was cleaming. She cleared the cedars at 22 yards and my shot was perfect. She dropped in sight and I just there. I was enjoying the cool morning so much I knocked another arrow. In a few minutes, I heard walking in the leaves and what should appear at 15-yards-a longbeard gobbler. He turned his back to me and although I usually don’t approve of shooting turkeys with a bow (too much wounding loss); I took the shot and pinned him to the ground. As I was about to climb down, along comes a coyote. I have only killed one coyote with a bow and that was from a box blind. I didn’t kill this one, either. I got the four-wheeler and drove right to the doe. With sleeves rolled up and long dressing gloves, I made short work of the job and soon had her loaded on the ATV-turkey tried on the back. When I got to the house where I had parked my truck, Ernie, the owner was in the driveway. He allowed it looked like I had a good morning. I told him I would bring him some meat in a day or so. He said, “Id rather have that turkey.” Therefore, I handed it to him. I checked my doe in and filled out a tag for the turkey. In 90 minutes, I had doe reduced to vacuum bags and in the freezer. I was looking forward to the next morning. I had a ladder stand tucked back in a thicket that I thought it was time to hunt it. I awoke to heavy winds and driving rain. Time for a little more snooze time. Then about 1:30, the rain stopped and I figured I’d better hit the woods. It was so wet it was deadly silent. I sat for an hour then heard something behind me. I was hidden by a huge tree so I slowly stood and turned to my right. A nice 8-point was standing 15 yards away with his head down behind a big redoak. My arrow split his heart. He made one run and dropped within 20 yards of the ATV. It took the front-end loader to load him and it took Ernie to help me get him in the truck. His head is on my wall today. He is the second best 8-pt I ever killed in TN and I had never seen him before. Those were two good days. Hope they get you a little pumped. ### Cutline:
#1- My rainy afternoon buck. The second largest 8-pt I have ever killed in TN.
