I've noted the january rubbing also. Here are some houghts on January rubbing:
-Could be somepart of a secondary rut, but that is pretty late. However I do see several fawns that appear to have been concieved in January.
-Could be the fact that a buck is letting other bucks know he made it through the year and that he is planning on being here next year.
-Could be part of releasing some testosterone for antler drop, so they can begin growing a new set.
-Probably none of the above..but it is what I thought were possibilites.

I've thought about a "secondary" rut too, but then why wouldn't there be a bigger surge of rubbing exactly a month following peak breeding? We see no surge in rubbing at that time, only the January peak.
In addition, that mid-January rubbing is mostly BIG signpost rubs, intead of a lot of rubs of all sizes.

Deer feel comfortable around Evergreens. The cover syndrome rules, and because it's a natural bug repellent?

Quite often the biggest singpost rubs will be on solitary cedar trees standing alone in expansive hardwoods. It's definitely something about cedar trees in this geographic area. Again, in other areas, other species are preferred.

In Wa, the Evergreen State the Cedar Rub ranks king with the Deer & Elk.

I have seen them rub all kinds of trees that are big, but most of them are cedars. I dont know why this sticks out to me, but I have found 2 huge beech trees that have been rubbed hard in the past several years and me and a fellow hunter have each killed a mature buck within sight of each of those 2 trees....just wierd to me. But everytime I find a rubbed beech tree, I get excited. But have only killed them on the much larger beech's.

I have found big, fresh rubs towards the end of the season almost every year for the past 10 years or so. For the last 5 years some of our biggest bucks have been killed the last 1 1/2 weeks of the season with some of them in hot pursuit of a doe. We have an excellent sex ratio of bucks to does with a pretty good age structure. With that said we should have a shorter more intense rut. With the exception of last year I've seen great rutting activity during peak time but also at the close of the season and beyond. I honestly think there are so many deer that it's impossible for all the does to be bred the first time around. Between those recycling back into estrous and those coming in the first time I honestly think our rut is lasting longer.

What we found were "signpost" rubs. Mostly pines and cedars that stood out. Wife and I spent a great deal of time in the woods looking for a buck she wounded on Christmas Eve and there weren't any new rublines that we saw, just fresh signpost rubs on the field edges everywhere.
