Have we lost our way? Have we lost our roots? Are we spoiled?

In Tennessee today with the large population of deer, liberal quotas, long hunting seasons, and not having to choose only one> Bow, ML, or Rifle to hunt with are we spoiled? Many states have a 1 buck rule with a very strict rules regarding weapons, and amount of time to fill your tag. Have we lost our way with the early hunting tradition of just being happy to go afield to experience the hunt, get with the boys, maybe fill a tag, and put food on the table to boot? It seems like today for some, to be an true hunter you must kill a monster buck, hunt with a bow, shoot micro groups, spend countless hrs in the field, prepare for your hunt meticulously, set up game cams, get and use the most high tec gadgets and clothing to get er done, etc. All of these would be great I suppose, but must we all do these to be a true modern day deer hunter? Is it because we are spoiled, or just where we are at now? Are we on the right track to encourage new participants to the sport with these requirements?

I suppose some of it comes from today’s pressure to keep up with the Jones’s mentality.
My buddy shoots a big buck so I have to also. I have to get the latest and greatest gadgets to do it right. I need to buy, or lease a large track of land to plant food plots, practice QDM etc to be a true modern day hunter.
I today and yesterday for that matter hunt for the sport of it only. It excites me tremendously year after year to go hunting, even if it’s just one weekend. My family, and job are my top priorities. Hunting I love, but I will not be consumed by it. Yes it kills me not to be able to hunt a weekend because I have to work, or family matters come up, but that’s just the way it is sometimes for me. It’s just hunting guys & gals, not War
Coming from a State with strict hunting regs & harvest allowances I feel so blessed to hunt here in TN enjoying TWRA’s great effort to make all these options available to the any kind of legal hunter today. I most likely had a better chance to kill a bigger buck in the other state, but I would not trade it for nothing being able to hunt here in Tn. with the way they have it set up here.
Is it right to question ones motives, or tactics constantly when after all we are all brother’s and sister’s in arms enjoying the great sport of deer hunting?
Enough rambling. Let’s go hunting...

I don't think I have...I feel the same stir and connection inside to myself and to the past hunting squirrels just as much as I do when hunting deer. or anything else for that matter......

I do not think we are spoiled even though we have some of the best hunting available. We are the recipients of many years of hard work by the TWRA and hunters that have gone before us.

Hunters, as a group, will have to continue to support the TWRA and be involved in managing our resources in order for us to continue to have the opportunity’s we enjoy now. We earn our opportunities by our actions and no one has to give us anything.

I think we are spoiled.

TWRA has done a magnificent job of satisfying all parties. Bow hunters, blackpowder hunters, rifle hunters, meat-hunters, trophy hunters, buck only hunters, whatever else kinda hunters have all been satisfied to a degree here in TN. The limits and seasons aren't biased toward any one party, yet all have the opportunity to satisfy there method or type of hunting. Compared to other surrounding states I think we are blessed. It seems that alot of states cater to one type or another but we ALL have a good and ample opportunity for meat, trophies, #'s, plenty and lengthy seasons, horns only, does only, etc. IMO no one is really "hand-cuffed".

Are we spoiled when it comes to deer hunting? Absolutely. How many hunted TN back in the 70s and 80s when deer were not plentiful, and anything bigger than a fork-horn buck was a monster?

The opportunities than now exist amaze me. Basically, almost any experience you want is now avialable in TN. We can't ever be Illinois, Kentucky or Iowa, simply because of geography, but there are pockets of TN where very large antlers bucks exist. If you're a meat hunter, Unit L awaits. If you want to join a lease, that option is open. If you want to practice virtually any form of management on private property, those options are open to you.

Now that's not to say everywhere is equal. It isn't and there's nothing anyone can do about that. Some habitat supports more deer than others, and some habitat natural grows bigger antlers than others, meaning you may have to travel some to find what your looking for. But unless you're after a Booner, you don't have to leave TN to find the experience you want. What a difference today's deer hunting is from when I started hunting TN in the mid 80s!

Yet as good as it is, we still have a contingent of hunters that aren't happy for whatever reason. They bitch, moan and complain about how poorly our state's deer herd is managed. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

Yes, we're spoiled.

I agree BSK. I killed my first deer in 1982, after several years of hunting. I had seen deer in the woods before that, but not many, and never a buck. however, anyone that saw a deer was the talk of camp that evening. not only did I kill my first deer in 1982, I killed 3 that year. i was in the top 1% of hunters in the state. Killing three now doesn't get you close to that. To beat it all, i killed two of them in East Tennessee, and that was almost unheard of. We still had unit D back then.
