I could read enough to know i believe its not correct.It shows Tn. with more road kill than Ky.Drive from Nashville to Paducha in November.Ky roadkill will out number Tn.4 to 1.
Must be the soil and the one buck limit.

I actually have eyewitness hunters who frequent several of the exits between here (Chattanooga area) and the Ohio River. Pryor to that I would talk to truckers, as well as any DOT worker I could run down.
But the most reliable info I have gotten since 1999 is my own personal observations. Myself and several other friends began travelling up and down I-24 in October of 1999 several times per year between the months of October and January. I have kept field notes on road kills. THere is a VERY stron correlation between the rut, and an increase in dead deer along the road.
My findings show that the rut (chasing/nose-tail activity) typically starts about November 4th with peak big, mature buck daytime sightings most prevalent on November 10th) for areas within a 30 mile radius of Paducah, Ky.
And gradually moves East toward Chattanooga where I definitely want to be in a tree on Nov. 18th. And will have high "rut" confidence from about ten days.
As far as my observations, there is only one factor that seems to have a large influence on these dates. Acorn or mast crop availability. I have noted over the years that in areas where there are huge amounts of acorns on the ground in October, ESPECIALLY White Oaks, the rut arrives earlier, is more DISTINCT, and lasts a little longer. But ONLY WHite Oaks. (Querus Alba).
Interestingly enough, there is also an area along the road that is exempt from the "norm". For some reason, the Clarksville, Tn. area has a rut that occurs about the same time as the Paducah area. In fact, it has not been un-common to see raod kill numbers higher and earlier than many places farther North.
I have also noted, like so many have written about in magazines, etc., that the first road kills to show up are generally young bucks/does. THen the big boys/girls add their carnage a little later.
THis observation is also supported by sightings while actually hunting. As we drive around our hunting areas, we notice more and more activity during mid-day. At first, there are young bucks seen standing in the wide open during mid day return trips from our morning hunt. THen, as the rut/chasing peaks, we'll start seeing actual chases between young bucks and does followed soon after by mature buck sightings at MID-DAY.
This is when text messages look something like this. Our agrrement is that when the first BIG buck is sighted at mid-day in the wide open word goes out..."It's happening".
Upon the receipt of this message, a hunter is smart to drop EVERYTHING. And get in the woods RIGHT NOW.
Another little tid-bit of info is this. REALLY hot weather might slow things down a bit, but our observations are that when the RUT is on, it is ON. Heat or no heat, they (the big boys) WILL move. I have kill one of my biggest bucks (153 inch 4.5 y/o) in 84 degree weather.
Also noteworthy is what I like to think of as a HIGH confidence time. If I have been hunting in hot/dry weather, and I know the peak rut/chase is near, I absolutely LOVE an evening hunt in a drizzle. For some reason, it really makes deer move.
A lot of this info is common sense, but I thought worth repeating.
I don't have graphs or charts, just years of field observations from me and several close friends.

As 102 detailed, I've found a very strong correlation between ruttng activity and car-deer collisions. I can watch the rut spread from Nashville westward by traveling I-40 regularly. The dead deer on the road will peak in Nashville first (generally Nov. 8-12) and then move westward, with the peak along the TN River (KY Lake) about Nov. 18-22.

Virginia was\is way up there as well, yet Va. Farm Bureau is one of the staunchest fighters of Sunday hunting in Va? Seems to me that a large insurer such as they are would be for any addition to kill #'s that did not include vehicular collisions.

Care to elaborate on how to find this data 102? Do you get it on a running, "as it is happening" basis, or a year end type of deal? Also, do the ins co's freely divulge this info to you? Thanks, this is very interesting.
