Watching yet another hunting show over the weekend and saw where a guy had taken an old buck, says it was 7 or 8 yrs old, that had absolutely not even a sign of an antler. There were barely visible "humps" where there should have been antler, but nothing. He said he had been hunting this deer for 3 yrs or so and had pics of it every year since he first captured it on a trail cam when they thought it was about 2.5 yrs old then. The talk turned to testosterone that it didn't get from birth, then at a certain point after birth I think. Every heard of anything like this? BSK? He considered it a true trophy animal btw, and said that it even tried to rub and lick trees and branches, but never said that he saw it actually breed.

I killed one very similar in Hickman co. several years ago, that was actually chasing a doe. I should have had him aged as he was at minimum 2.5 but much more likely 3.5+ based on body characteristics, and size for the area. He had 2 pretty large pedicels but no Antlers. He also had both testicles and they were completely normal looking and as big as a softball.lol I sure didnt consider him a trophy but I was glad to kill him, on the outside chance that he would pass the genes to his offspring.

Bucks can be prevented from growing antlers for several reasons, but most are associated with problems with testosterone production or recognition.

Does that mean he's in disguise so that no one will recognize him?

HA!

Actually, animals can have the problem of their body not recognizing testosterone.

My son killed one sevral years ago up at ft. campbell. We thought it was a doe (good size doe) when we got over to it there was one large (about the size of a fist) lump on one side where the antler should have been. They said he was about 5 1/2 years old.
