I am thinking of trying LBL this year during the pre-rut/rut after or between draw hunts. Does anyone know how crowded the place is once the rifle hunters are gone and it is archery only, with gun season going on in the remainder of the state? I have several acres to gun hunt on, but every year I get sicker and sicker of rifle season. I want to bow hunt and after the pressure ison from the gun hunters, taking a bow feels like going to a gun fight with a knife! No offence to rifle hunters, just want to bow hunt where it is a bit quieter.

LBL is ALL bow hunting except for 9 days. That is 3 2-day gun hunts and the one day preceeding each of those. Every other day is Bow-Only. LBL really never gets too crowded anytime during the whole season but it seems that way if you ride around the roads. There are many campers and hunters who park near main roads which makes it look extremely crowded but once you get back into the woods a ways you won't see very many people unless you just hunt right on or near some of LBL's main trails. There is a lot of land on the TN side compared to the amount of hunters in any given year. I suggest scouting a bit or even walking the North/South trail to get a better idea of the land. December 1st has considerably less hunter traffic but you will still have hard core bow hunters there through season's end.

After the gun season opens the first week of November, the pressure at LBL slacks off quite a bit. Up until then, there are many more hunters on the weekends - Fri, Sat, & Sun. If you decide to go, try to get there on Sunday and hunt until Friday and you will have no trouble finding a good spot.
From the time gun season opens until the area closes in January, it isn't heavily hunted at all. Most of the safety zones are open beginning December the first until the end of the season. In my opinion, that is the best time to hunt there.
The rut usually begins heating up around the first of November and really gets good about the middle of the month. I personally like the first two weeks of Nov.
Go for it.........I think you will like it!

I hunted about every weekend last season and don't recall seeing a hunter in the woods. As a matter of fact I could count on my hands the number of times Ive seen a hunter in the woods the past 10 years. Hit the woods early go deep and stay late. Maps are available at LBL.org, that would be a good starting point. Like TL said the rut seems to peak around the 10th of November but, from statewide juvy weekend thru late November is a great time to be in a tree. Good Luck

You guys are great! I really didnt think I would get many good responses, as most wont tell "secrets" about public land. I am about 2 1/2 hrs away and wont get to hunt it much, maybe a couple weekends. I dont have any great expectations of shooting a trophy buck, but I do hope to at least see some deer. Like I said before, I have several hundred private acres to hunt, I just love bowhunting and want to get away from all the "booming". Thanks again guys and I hope ya'll all three have BIG taxidermy bills this fall!
