What is the deal with leaving your treestand in overnight? I called our regional office and had to call the area manager. It has to be cleared through them to leave the stand in overnight, and they said if someone was in your stand there is nothing you can do about it. So I guess if you hunt the WMA's you need to carry in your stand every morning. Are they trying to discourage people from hunting? Correct me if I am wrong, but that is the way it seems to me. What is the purpose of scouting?

Its to prevent someone from setting up camp trying to drive or prevent other hunters for hunting the same area. Long discussion pro's and con's on the ladder stand thread.

Purpose of scouting is to figure out how the deer are using the terrain and to choose your setups. Hanging your tree stand is not necessarily the same thing.

I don't really see how how not allowing fixed stands is a deterrent to hunting.

Furthermore, I understand that property left sitting for more than 24 hours is legally declared abandoned, so there's not much the state officials could do about someone in your stand, and even if they could and came all the way out there to kick a person out of your stand, I imagine hunting there would be ruined for the day anyway. Not allowing hunters to leave permanent stands is probably the easiest way for the state officials to not have to deal with petty disputes over a tree on public land.

TN seems to strictly enforce this policy as I don't see many "rogue" fixed stand on public land. MS has the same rule, but, judging from the amount of ladder stands and tripods I come across without IDs, its not enforced at all.

Thanks for telling me about the thread WRbowhunter. I just think for people that walk in about 1 - 1.5 miles it makes it a little rougher on them. One of the problems up here is the bear reserves, one weekend we had 15 bears on us and they are not to scared of people. I was not talking about fixed stands, I would usually leave my climber for the next day or two to use and it would be locked to the tree. For some people who are older or have a disability we need more areas for them to gain access, we usually have to carry my friends dad stand in for him.

did read correctly that you now have to put your name and TWRA # on your stand when hunting a WMA.

WRbowhunter is correct, its so that everyone has the same right to hunt an area. No dibbs on public land, its on a first come first serve basis. The big problem that I have experienced is that you will find an area to hunt, setup your stand hours before daylight and some inconsideration hunter, who thinks he ownes the public area you are hunting, will get mad and childish at the sametime and setup 50 yeards from you. Thats want makes me mad as h***, not that I have to take my stand with me when I leave. Just my two cents worth.

Maintechcnc, we beat this topic up pretty good when I asked about ladder stands on WMA(s). A lot of people are against them, but there are a lot that think they should be allowed. I personally am against anything that gives someone the notion that, that is there area to hunt. However If I am scouting and come across one I usually go elsewhere, but the flip side to that is being i carry mine in the ladder stand guys can't tell that i have scouted that area and therefore I have encountered guys who have come in after i scouted and area and put a ladder stand in. then I get to the area first to hunt on a hunting day and they show up later and refuse to leave as they will have to hunt off the ground or they stomp off cussing you like you did something wrong. Most time you don't know the stand is there as you enter in the dark, but even if you did, if you know you scouted before it was there, or just want to hunt there it "should" be first come first serve on public land. Like wise if you get there second you should leave the area to the first person there JMO.

This rule is not going to change anything whatsoever, the same jerks are going to put stands out in an attempt to claim an area as 'thiers'

I'm interested to see just how many hunters actually mark their stands.

On top of the few quarrels/disagreements that occasionally come with public land hunting now we'll probably have others checking our stands for the numbers. Of course if somebody's stand doesn't have a number, it's ok for some thief to walk off with it right? Also the numbered stands have priority over the non-numbered ones. Geez, we really need to get along as hunters, treat weach other with respect, and share public land.

Hunting public lands tends not to be a lazy man's pursuit. You're likely going to have to work for it and part of the work may involve packing your stand in and out. Of course, you could also hunt from the ground.

As stated previously, permanent or fixed stands imply a degree of ownership. Generally, a person who has placed a ladder stand on public lands tends to only have one stand and is thus territorial when someone knowingly or unknowingly infringes. Case and point, when I came across a old, rusted 2 man ladder stand with a rotten piece of burlap hanging off placed within range of a nice saddle, did I presume that it was abandoned and count on hunting the same saddle, or did I consider it "claimed"? I ask because I bypassed this saddle for 2 full seasons and, having walked past it numerous times, never detected any indication of anyone hunting from that stand. Sure enough, the one time I decide to hunt that saddle on some random Tuesday morning, the father/son coverall clones show up 15 minutes after 1st light and throw a fit.

I remember that day well. I woke up at 1:45 in the morning, drove 1.5 hours and hiked 1.5 miles, half of that out of my way to be downwind, settled in my stand over an hour before 1st light only to be ruined by two bumbling idiots, who obviously hadn't tried on their coveralls since the last time they went hunting, a collective 75 pounds ago, who then showed up 15 minutes after 1st light with a machete to do a little "clearing out" before they start their hunt. After all, dad hung this stand in the 90s and its the only stand they have to hunt from. Who was I to encroach on their spot? After all, the man is just trying to teach his son how to hunt and there is obviously a ladder stand there, therefore claiming ownership. How could I have been so audacious to think that rusted pile of welded scrap metal and rotten piece of burlap was otherwise than a active tree stand where a father could take his son hunting once every 3 or 4 years... --planning to show up after first light so that dad could again find his way there after such a long hiatus, always knowing that this was "their" spot and that their spot was always just there, waiting for their eventual return.

I am still curious how they got that two man stand back there. It must have taken 4 grown men to haul that silly hunk of steel through the woods. All that effort only to sit 8 feet off the ground... I'll never understand some people.
