Sky, thats the only way most any deer has ever been killed with archery equipment, massive hemmorage and death due to blood loss.
Most times I dont think they suffer much if at all. I have shot them behind the shoulder, between the ribs, and them never even know they were shot. They will jump a little like a bug bit them, look around and even at the blood pouring out of them on the leaves, and go back to feeding, then a few seconds later their legs begin to tremble and they simply fall over.

I agree,...I think that archery is a realitvley painless way to go. (ideally)....any one thats cut there self extremly bad with a knife knows that the actual pain is minimual, in fact, the worst pain is when you go to get it sown back up...jmo

A blood trail to follow will teach you many things about a deer and their habits and instincts. I love taking my boys any chance I get to do a tracking job. They love it as well, and their unknowingly learning things that can only be learned from being there and experiencing it! In a perfect world there would never be any suffering or track jobs, but in reality it happens, and we need to be prepared and know how to handle them as they come along. Hunting equals death, bottom line, and while it may not be pretty, it is necessary!

I have killed as much game as anyone here and will continue to take whatever game I see fit. Why is it so hard to understand that the least favorite part of the hunt, for me, is the actual killing...?

Like I said above, if it bothers you, and like you said, you dont like it, then why do it?? Take a camera, it will solve your problems perfectly. You can still do eveything leading up to the shot, then 'click' with your little camera and you dont have to do something you dont like!
I have no problem with you feeling that way, but dont come on a hunting site and act like your right in saying that we shouldnt like to kill our prey. Thats what hunters do, otherwise we would be "watchers" which I think would suit you fine based on your statements here!

A lot of hair splitting going on here...I think I understand what BH is trying to say (one of the few times! \:D j/k bh \:\) )

...I think there is a certain saddness when any animals life is taken...at least there is for me..Its called compassion. I would hope that anyone would feel and understand that compassion to at least some small extent...

I think it is thru that compassion that not only are the appreciation and respect for the animal derived from, but also in strengthening our responsabilty to make sure that the takeing that animals life happens as quickly and as humanley as possable...

...but there is also an understanding for me that it is neccesary event in the hunting process that I have chosen to do...thats just part of it....circle of life....

EXACTLY.....thanks for the words.

To go just a bit further and be done with it....

IMO, the hunt consists of everything that takes place from the very first day of scouting to walking up to a dead animal.

The hunt is not complete until the animal is dead.

Simply because I am close enough to take a picture, does not mean that I have successfully ended the hunt with a harvest.

Just as scouting, stand placement and waiting are parts of the hunt, so is shot placement and an ethical and humane kill.

The jubilation that I get when I see a deer fall is euphoric......NOT because I have taken a life but more because I have successfully completed my journey....

Holding my drawn bow or my shouldered rifle waiting for that good opening to take the shot is something that can not be described. It is a feeling that is teetering between glory and defeat, depending on the animals next few steps....

Making the perfect shot and watching the deer drop in it's tracks is like pulling in to your own driveway after a 12 hour drive...........

But....once I get up to my downed animal, i must admit that i do have a bit respect for the life that I just took. I realize that the journey that I was on would not be possible without the animal and all the feelings (good and bad) that I experience throughout the entire season, again, would not be possible without this great animal......

How many bass fisherman practice catch and release...?

just wondering, because if i could do that with deer, maybe tranquilize them , take a few pics and then let it go....I would...provided I didn;t like deer meat, but i do...lol.

thanks
