I'd first like to say that there are no wrong answers here.
I was just wondering if anyone out there is very choosey about what they take during deer season....
please allow me to explain.
First, I like to shoot a doe or two for the meat. Normally with a bow. Now, since my processor doesn't charge by the pound, I like to get bigger deer so I will end up with more meat per processing fee. I will not process antlered deer, so that leaves out the whole buck thing.....it goes way back to the old days and not worth the time to explain. Oh, and when I take a nice buck that I plan to mount, I give the meat to HFTH....
Since i don't eat antlered deer and won't pay three hundred big ones to mount the thing, and since I've gotten over the "I NEED TO KILL" feeling.....well, you see where I'm going with this.....
So....that leaves me with this.......I will only shoot bigger does (weight wise) and bigger bucks (antlerwise)....
Now, if a friend specifies that they would like a young doe, then I will gladly take them one, but in my case paying the same fee to process a 75 pound deer that yields me half the meat of a 130 pound deer, well, that's not good economics right there....lol.
Many people I know will shoot the first deer that they get a shot at, especially with a bow. They call it "breaking the ice". Well, I "broke the ice" 36 years ago and have never felt the need to kill just for the sake (or sport) of killing.....
Again, no wrong answers here. We are all different and I was just wondering if you put any restrictions on what you shoot first or what you shoot at all, if it's legal of course....!
Let's play nice here.....

I won't shoot anything over 35 yards away.

I have no qualms about taking does at liberty for freezer meat. I haven't killed a buck in the last 5 seasons and I've passed on a bunch. I'm choosey.

I always try to kill a doe or 3 for the freezer and then look for a good buck, but I've said it before if there is no meat in the freezer and a small buck comes by I may shoot him. I'll eat a young buck, but an older buck is probably going to HFTH.

This year I'll probably shoot several Does early on to get some meat in the freezer and some jerky started. i'll also kill a good buck if one presents itself.
