I use both, the chains are the ones I use to leave out year round. I add a ratchet strap during season and then take it back off after season. The strictly strap type stands come down after season and I replace these straps as needed due to wear and dry rot.

I usually use 2 ratchet straps and use the chain as a back up also. But what I really worry about is the cable breaking or slipping. Has anyone every heard of this happening?

I hear you on the cable, I am always worried that the cable will come loose from the seat support to the actual platform. Its one of those personal pet things that I watch like a hawk, and if anything could happen, seems like that would be it!

I use both types, strap and chain, but prefer chain. I love loc on type stands. Hate ladder stands. I buy the cheapest locons I can find and put them up anywhere I think I might hunt. If they get stolen, I am not out much. I put them super high and space the steps real far apart, don't have a lot of thiefs wanting to climb 35 ft for a 35 dollar stand. j
Basically what I do but I pull my lone wolf sticks after I hang them and they are only about 20 ft high. This is on public land.
On my land I run the 20ft sticks up to stand then a screw in above to work as a holder/last hand hold. I lock stand, but luckily havent had anything (feeder, camera,...nothing) stole off my land yet.
I like the height I can get in a hang on, the concielment, versatility, light weight, low noise and ease of decent (sometimes I drop things). They are the best for my personal way of hunting by far.

I have just one left and you guys are right...there is a question in the back of your mind when you set in a lock on stand. And why are the platforms so small? Any suggestions on a good lock on with a big platform???
