I feel a little anxiety while searching for the right tree too. I hate going in an area that I've never scouted, but if I did I'd take some serious precautions. IMO, a green headlamp works best, always have some limb clippers easily accessible, and wear some light clothing even if its freezing. Add an extra 30 min before shooting light because something always seems to come too. Last thing, spray your clothing and boots down every 5 min or so while searching for the right set-up. Every little bit helps IMO..... Good luck

Ive found myself up a dead tree once, got out of it quickly. That is my biggest concern when climbing before it gets light.
As for determining how far up I go, I pull ropes are wrapped around my stand so that every loop I pull off is 3 feet. 6 wraps and the seat portion of my stand is at 18 feet.

You are correct, i go thru much torture in trying to determine the correct tree based in part on "what" view it will offer and wind direction. I almost never just go into an area without pre-scouting and making a beforehand decision to ensure that i get in the best possible location.....many times when i have secured that tree i use the reflective tacks to get me back there with the headlamp Petzal green.

I used to use a climber on WMA hunts. Sometimes I used them when needing to get in a place that I could not put any other kind of stand...until I discovered climbing sticks and hang-ons.....love them.
My problem with climbers is coming down......going up, I have never had a fear of falling, but coming down, is a much scarier deal for me.
I just can't seem to get rid of that edgy feeling coming down.
I have not used a climber in quite a few years. I have an ol man climber that has never been on a tree....
My reasoning is when I get up there, I feel naked.
Having to trim limbs off trees going up exposes you to anything below you...I hate that....
plus, we are NOT supposed to trim limbs off trees on Chaney.....
good luck .....

I hate climbers, hang ons, and ladder stands. My list of complaints against these types if stands is so long that I'm not going to bother listing. I use a Tree Saddle exclusively. On private properties, I use screw in steps. On public land, I begrudgingly use a climber to get to a desired height and then place 4-6 rope on steps above it, step off the climber and settle into my Tree Saddle for a 360 degree shooting radius, no fears of falling off, and no problems with shifting or creaking sounds.
I hate lugging around that stupid climber when I have to use it. I bought the lightest one I could find and striped it down to absolute bare bones since I don't use it for anything but going up and down, but still, that thing is 13 pounds of bulky, dead weight.
R and D for conventional tree stands has a LONG ways to go if you ask me.

A good is safeand comfortable as long as you dont do stupid things! I have a pic, I wish I could find it of my brother in a tree with only the top. The bottom had fallen. He didnt set it up right and tried to fix it in the air. It didnt help that he had a cheap stand....down it went. He is not the brightest.

For the life of me I can't figure out why "average" hunters don't use a simple GPS......it will take you straight to your tree in rain, snow or pitch dark.
The one thing that a GPS won't do for you year after year is let you know if the specific tree you hunt is healthy or not when you return in the dark. Maybe it got cracked by lightning. In the universe of TN hunters I am familiar with the vast majority wouldn't even think of walking in with a tree stand on their back in the dark.
Good binocs and a GPS.
Why would anyone go hunting without them?
