I know ethics is going to come into play here,But I am sure most of us have pulled one of those 65 70 yard shots off. I have killed a deer at 60 yards ,I practiced that shot before season,in open country hiding behind round hay bales. In open country you will be easily fooled, unless you have time to range it,which seldom happens. I made a clean and successful shot because I practiced, and had a pin set up.As far as Energy the arrow went through and stuck in the ground a couple inches. Not saying this is the best choice for most hunters since archery is "an up close and personal event, and do not recommend any one taking this shot"

60 yards at Catoosa in a food plot from the ground. I killed an 80 lb spike that ran about 50 yards.

Out West I've killed animals to about 60 yards, but Whitetails 45 yards at Catoosa one year is my longest shot. I wont even shoot that far anymore unless its a unique situation, 35-40 is my max with 20 being much more favorable!

28 yards is the longest. My average is probably 16 yards, though.

I range my area and pick trees/stumps that are about 20 yards.
I don't think that I have ever shot at a deer much further than that.....
Most times I get so close that I don't need to.....

Most times I get so close that I don't need to..... Thats the whole idea, Im much more proud of the good bucks I've shot inside 20 yards that never knew I was there, than any long shots i've ever taken! Bow hunting is all about up close and personal. It will test your skills when you have to pinpoint exactly where they will be, not within a 100 yards any direction. Thats what makes it so much fun, the challenge!!! Separates the Men from the Boys so to speak! LOL

38 yards! I don't think I will ever shoot that far again though. Yes, I practiced and could've hit at 50 if needed. I was very lucky. The deer werent spooked, wind slightly blowing. The deer ducked, and turned and I hit her in the neck or she would've been hit bad. For the record I was and still shoot a Mathews Switchback XT so I'm not shooting a "slow bow".
Deer are just to fast reacting and I personaly do not think it is ethical to shoot at a deer past 40, much less 35 yards. Bows now-a-days are much faster than used to be but 60 yards is a long shot with a bow. Conditions may be perfect but I won't shoot it. My hat is off to those that do but IMO and my opinion only, if you keep shooting at deer that far you are gonna end up with a bad hit on one. I am not knocking anyone that has done this but just sayin I won't and I trust you guys' judgement that if you feel comfy in doing it, then by all means do it.

I mugh prefer inside 20 yards but hunting out west or hunting barren ground caribou is a different story. Shots at over 40 and up to 60 are common. So you practice for that and take only the good shots.

My farthest shot on a deer is 25 yards. Last years buck was shot at 15 yards. I like to set up close. I got tired of the deer ducking the string on those old slow bows so I just got used to getting up close and personal with them. Now that the bows are fast AND quiet I could probably back off a little bit.

57 yards on a 7 point off Park Road in Anderson County. I missed him clean at 35 or so and he allowed me that error-
That was 20 years ago. Back then, I had no max as my brother and I practiced at 100 every day and were fairly decent shots around here.
My max now is 35-40. A little knowledge and some age has caught up with me...

Killed 2 doe 50+, and missed a very nice 8 pt at about 60 when my arrow hit a limb but that was years ago. I probably wouldn't shoot past low 40's now, too little room for error once you break that 40 yard mark.

45 yards with a Bear Grizzly recurve 48# pull, but I was lucky. I hit her in the hip and just happened to severe the main artery. Never seen so much blood and she only went about 50 yards.
I learned alot and never tried that long a shot again, because I knew how "lucky" I was not to lost that deer to the buzzards.

Few seasons ago took a decent 6 pointer at 41 yards.I'd never take that length of a shot in dense woods, but this deer was crossing and open space and had no worry of any obstruction to the arrow.

The worst scenario you can have is a deer straight under you. they are hard to hit ,choke time ,but it is a hard shot . you must remember to bend at the waist

38 yards! I don't think I will ever shoot that far again though. Yes, I practiced and could've hit at 50 if needed. I was very lucky. The deer werent spooked, wind slightly blowing. The deer ducked, and turned and I hit her in the neck or she would've been hit bad.
i had a similar situation on a 22 yd shot. the deer moved and turned far enough that the arrow passed over its back and hit it in the throat. it still stumbled off about 40 yds. that same reaction at 40 yds would have probably resulted in a clean miss. they are quick and the distance they can move before an arrow can cover 40+ yds. incredable.

40 yards confirmed on my buck at PI last year. Got one around 45 yards or so at LBL once. Got lucky because it dropped and turned to run. The arrow hit it low on the entry side and came out high and the exit side. Watched it fall after about a 30 yard long run.

Did you have your bow sighted for 100 yards? What were the circumstances under which you elected to take the shot?
I know 100 yard shots aren't unheard of out West, but down South, its just not done. I think the average Bow kill is 17 or 18 yards.

I was shooting a high country supreme set on 96 lbs.,27.5 2216,4 blade muzzy 90 grain, chrono at 286 f.p.s. I used a sight master sight with finger adjuster to change elevation at full draw.& settings at 45,60,75, & 90.I shot alot.If anybody familier with Odell, had his store on willow in cookeville, some watch me shoot against him.He had a McKensie buck target beside his store,we ended up in the middle of the road shooting up hill tied at 90 yds. never missing out of the kill zone tight behind the leg, half way up.I ended up buying the target because a guy wagered I coulded hit the deer in the eye at 30 yards,I did it at 40.Odell got mad because I shoot broadheads & it tore it up good.

Come on guys, roll your pant legs up, it's getting deep in here. cough-cough. We're not talking feet but yards. I can do it but I shoot alot not the month before season bow shooter or the guy that shoots a pie plate and is happy with three out of five in a pie plate. I hunted out west alot and saw that it can be done, you just have to have the equipment and the time to practice. Its amazing how much a rangefinder and six pin sight will help someone or some people that are willing to apply their self to practice.

I believe both of them.
Years ago, my brother and I practiced regularly at 80 (furthest shot we could practice- we'd have shot 100 had there been room). Shooting at range isn't hard if you put in your practice.
Nice work guys-
Why is it that those that can't bitch about those that do?

I am not 'bitching' about anything... maybe you outta read my post again. I'm just saying I seriously doubt anyone actually shooting a deer from 100 yards away with archery equipment. You can believe whatever you want, that's your opinion.
At that range the animal could easily move 5 yards in any direction before the arrow impacted.

I'm just saying I seriously doubt anyone actually shooting a deer from 100 yards away with archery equipment.
Sticking ones head in the sand just gets it dirty-
I'm betting my trigger pulls with a muzzleloader would really mess with things...

Man this crap gets old. This is not what hunting is about at all. Hunting is about getting close. Kudos to the person that can way lay deer at 100steps, but to me true success is doing your homework and not having to take such risky shots.

Bob,what gets old is people judging others & never walk in their footsteps.A simple question asked, simple answered given.Anytime a shot is taken, risk & responsibility happens.Only the person taken the shot can judge themselves.

40 yards (first buck ever killed with my bow 8pt). The deer was feeding up a ridge level with me not spooked. Double lung ran 40 yards.

Hey man I said kudos to you and everyone else so your welcome for the compliment. Past that I was just stating my opinion on the matter of long range shots with a bow at deer. I wasn't judging you or your situation. Past that see my signature line below.......

Glad we have all kissed and made up, If you practice like I use to every day some unreal things can happen
At the 3 d course I shot at they would have a long shot at unknown distances ,most over 100yds. I have seen people hit it ,and I even hit the target a time or two. If you do not know the range you are realy just lucky.

I've gone around 23 yards many times, mostly on turkey for some reason. My limit would be 25. Interestingly, I've never had a shot that was outside my range (within reason). It's either been within 23 or it's been way outside the zone.
