Everything you read, watch or hear concerning deer hunting, one of the top factors in stand placement is wind direction. With several stand in place, I choose the stand with the most favorable wind direction forecasted. Each time I hunt, I hang pieces of thread and check them often. No matter what stand I choose or what wind direction is forecasted, the thread will move in every direction. With the wind switching thru out the day in all directions, I'm fighting a losing battle. So what's a guy to do???

I play the angles......
get as high as you can stand (20-25 feet for me)and try to pick a tree where the wind will be taking your scent close to the trails but not exactly at them....
I know this is hard to explain and I wish I had a drawing to better explain myself, but I do not.
you might be surprised how big of a difference a few yards makes when placing your stands.....
For example......every property I can hunt , I have to enter the area from the north. logic tells me that if there is a north wind, I can not hunt there, but I do and with good success....
angles are everything when hunting the wind....

Learn about thermals, along with how the air currents move on the property you are hunting. Terrain makes a huge difference in which way an air current will move, and thermals also play a huge part and can be determined by terrain.

The early morning forecasts will usually give you a pretty good idea of that days wind direction. The problem is that thermals and terrain are hindering the wind in unpredictable ways.
The higher in the stand you are the better the chances your scent will stay above an approaching deer's nose at least close to your stand. As much as I watch deer head for the hills where I hunt I rarely see them concern themselves too much with wind direction. It seems they become more concerned when they are bedded down. They seem to have the wind at their back in one direction while watching the other direction.

This may sound silly but depending on the wind is what type of stand I will use for the day. Example if it is a windy day blowing all directions I use a climber, reason is I can keep the wind in my face or to the side. I can't move a fixed stand if you follow me here...No wind days use a fixed stand on one of the honey holes...Also on a windy day I set no lower than 20 feet in a stand.

Every stand an terrian is different,like said before, I have a stand that is set for a south west wind ,which is usally what I have most of the season. The wind will shift after it goes by me and blow back south along a hollow. I climb as high as plssible and still getting good shots.
I have places I thought would be great with a certain wind and it change when I get there and I have deer come from god knows where,Never thought I would see them come from the interstate with a weed patch on it.
I have buddys that just hunt,there gun hunters only but they never watch the wind. Climb huigh and hunt. They say the deer dont know what he is doing so how do we predict it? GOOD QUESTION

If your hunting in hilly or mountainous terrain all bets are off when it come to prevailing wind directions...you just got to do and hope for the best in dealing with it...
Go to a river or good sized creek and watch the water as it flows...thats is exactly what you are dealing with with air flow in the hill country. It will pool and eddy just like water in every direction posable....you can try to out quess it but you don't know for sure what its going to do untill you get in the stand, and the only thing for certain then is that it won't be doing that for very long....

Use a climber and set up on (what you believe/hope will be) the downwind side of where you expect to see deer. I look at the weather channel on the internet which shows how the prevailing wind is predicted to shift hour-by-hour. Nothing you can do about thermals or eddies.

I don't bother trying to determine wind direction any more, I only concentrate on the thermals and use the terrain to carry my scent away from the immediate area I am hunting.

Nothing you can do about thermals or eddies.
If you are hunting on the back side of a ridge from the direction the wind is moving from, you can actually try and put your stand into the direction of the main currents from the area your hunting. That may actually put you down current of the hunting area in the eddy itself...its all just a gamble tho...

Check wind i.e thermals before you ascend into tree. Check often while in tree. Check when you come down. It may take a while but eventually you will start to get familiar with the thermals and how they work in a particular area or stand.

As mentioned, pay attetntion to thermals and wind currents in relation to the terrain you're hunting. Winds will have different reactions to different types of terrain features and may actually reverse directions against the flow so it's possible to have an "upper" and "lower" current between the ground and your hunting height. I always check the hourly forecasts on a weather site and it comes in handy when they're right. For instance I may know the wind direction is due to change by 9:30 in the morning. If I have a particular place I'm going to hunt with winds prior to 9:30 I'm prepared to come down and move by then. I always try to have at least 2 stand locations to accomodate opposite winds in any location I hunt and I've moved from one to the other in the middle of a hunt several times.

Hunt with the forecasted prevailing wind in mind....same thing happens in my area....still if they are calling fro winds from the west/north west i hunt with that in mind..Even if the wind changes a direction it still will yeild that most favored direction the biggest % of the time and that is all you can do and that is enough! Just Hunt. Dont worry.
