I've considered hunting with a decoy during the rut in an area where there is not gun hunting.
Can anybody share if this is an effective strategy and should I use a doe or a buck?
I know a doe decoy needs to be facing away from me and a buck decoy facing towards me but that is it.

Use it where they can see it from a ways off, it seems to spook them if they are surprised by it. I have had mixed results, but have not used one enough to make a judgement on them either way. It certainly works well for others, and I am sure like anything else in the right situation it is deadly.

I'm completely uninterested in hauling one of those decoys around.

Ole DOEreen has brought two eight pointers into muzzleloader range and one larger buck that held his ground further out. Now if my ole DOEreen can do that with three legs, one eye and a crooked ear, I can't wait to see what the new one from the box will do this season.
I absolutely LOVE hunting with her(it). I bought her at one of the earlier vous auctions. She is an early model MOJO decoy that I never used the motion parts due to a missing part. She (it) has removeable antlers, a tail that can be positioned at any level, which I prefer the straight out position during rut.\
I have a popup blind set up by early bow season and it stays put the entire season. I will set DOEreen up mid way in a long narrow hayfield. I make sure she is well hidden from the roadway, since roadhunting is some folks past time. I have had bucks make scrapes within two feet of my popup over night. When rut is in full swing, a dose of attractant placed on a small white cloth tied to the tail can cause some real reaction from the bucks. The first eight I took was coming in to her during a damp misty morning. I have wished a hundred times I had recorded his reaction. He was literally licking his chops as he eased to within ten feet of her. He never got to find out if she was real as the smoke cleared, he went down!
Now the does I've had that see her, respond as if they fear the new comer to their area. But I have had younger does circle and stomp at her, while their momma stood about thirty yards back, huffing and blowing.
If you have a decoy, use it. If not to hunt, just to film and enjoy the deer's reactions. I can't wait to give DOEreen's new buddy a field test and fit it with a name. Maybe I will have another success story this season.

I have used a decoy from time to time and had success with it... I have flambou(?) spotted fawn decoy. I like it. I usually always carry it with me...it rolls up about the size of shirt and just slips into my pack...
I don't use it much but at times I will pull it out...I don't use it in the typical sence to try and specificly lure deer in as much as I use it as a confidence decoy to put any animals at ease...It seems to do pretty good, It seems to work well with turkeys too. I have also killed a coyote over it!....I am hoping to get the chance to try it on a bear this season during archery if everything goes right....

I'd like to , if nothing else but for the show, but I hunt the thicker woods and visibility is at a minumum, with some of the longer clear views only 60-70 yds.
