There is more to hunt than just the Island.

The first day is usually the best because the deer move off the refuge and there is nothing going on to push them back on.

thanks for the reply,
A few more questions:

Have you hunted both sides of the river? Are there areas of woods that join up with the WMA from Bowaters land? Is it all pretty much open fields boardered by woods? How is access to it?

There is alot of private property that borders the WMA. There is also alot of old timber co. land that is leased. Most of this property is very thick. There are fields and wooda on both sides of the river and there are also safety zones that are usually planted in corn. Most of the deer seem to be killed on the first day of the hunt.

I hunted this area last year and I saw plenty of deer the first day but most of them were running and offered no shot. On the second and third day I did not see a deer.

We always went in by boat. Warning: get in there early if you do. Make sure where you are going and mark it so you can find it in the dark. We've hunted a couple of different places and usually see deer. The trick is to get on a trail they are using this time of year.

Get a map, study it. Then spend a few days driving and locating the different areas that are access by land. Some of it is cut up in small sections that not many know about or hunt. It has very little access without crossing private land. I have had luck in the past asking for permission to access the refugee from private land owners. I have killed a ton of does off it and two good bucks. I also always planned to stay in stand all day. Most hunters will get out of their stand around 11:00 - 12:00 and start pushing the deer around.

You really need a gps if you are going in by boat because when the fog starts to set in about an hour before daylight any kind of light is useless and I have seen the fog not lift until 10:00 and if you don't have a gps you will go round and round in circles , that time of year it is foggy just about every morning.

I bought a map of the river and it had the WMA borders marked on it.
