Bottom Hunter's last reply on the "skill or luck" thread made me think of this. I have a buddy that's an accomplished deer hunter, bow hunting more specifically. But, when we were first starting to enter the world of bow hunting, around 1977-78ish, I remember his first deer very well. He shot at this mangled looking 6 pt, with one horn wrapped down around it's ear even, and, if not for pure luck, would have shot a foot over this deer......but it raised its head just as he shot and looked back over at him. He hit that deer perfectly, and I do mean PERFECTLY down the ear hole! \:D He said it jumped and did a flip landing with the arrow holding it's head up and seemingly looking back at him. I think he wasted two more shots at that deer thinking it was still alive and about to get up and leave! \:D

btw, there wasn't even a scratch on the outer ear of that deer it was so perfectly centered in the hole!

Anymore luck stories out there?

Sorta luck or maybe just good kharma.

My son and I were heading to our 76 acres one morning. It had rained the previous day and we had to have a 4x4 vehicle to get in and out of there. So we took his 4x4 Toyota.

Just a mile from the house it started making a very bad noise in the front end. Popping and thumping. We decided the best idea was to take it back home until we had time to figure out what was wrong and look at it in the daylight.

On the way back home, we decided to reload into my 2wd F-150 instead and head the totally opposite direction to a small but very long and narrow 5 acre tract I had bought for investment resell a few months before. (but it had deer on it too!) No 4x4 needed on it.

I put him in a good spot on an elevated rock outcropping I had scouted early when I bought it. About 9:00 he dropped his first 8 pointer from there!

I guess it was bad luck, turned into good blind luck, that we hunted that spot on that morning.

Turned out that the tires had been rotated on his truck a week before and some idiot didn't tighten the lugs on one wheel! We couldn't tell in the dark what it was, but later that day, my son sure was happy the "idiot" had done that!

This happened 20 years ago. Guy I know was on a 5 day bear hunt. Had not been seeing anything when nature calls. So he is over taking care of nature when a bear shows up. He ends up shooting the bear. Guess the bear caught him with his pants down. LOL

my uncle loaned me a 45 cal H&R break action 20 some odd years ago,he then put me on a ridge near the youth camp in dekalb county, walking up the ridge i spied a deer, took a shot at it about 70 yards, missed, went on up the hill & set down & 10 minutes latter a deer came back down the hill.i reckoned it was the same 1 i had missed,it stepped behind some trees & i got my smoke pole turned the right way.when it stepped out it stopped & pointed me like a bird dog,i shifted about a foot & let it roll.when the smoke cleared i had a flopping deer down :D,by the time i found the pockets with all the makings in it the deer stopped .got to it & started looking to see where i had hit it & when i rolled it over the top of its rolled up ,i thought i had shot a deformed deer .the round 45 cal ball had went in a nostral & then went straight down the roof of the mouth cutting all the bones,i was shocked to find a kickstand ,the buttons were just under the hair line.it was my first muzzle loader deer the gun was shooting higher the farther out you went & it i had aimed at the heart instead of the front chest i would have over shot again

First year in TN,walked in the woods in the dark,"Go up past the cedar patch, and go up a tree."

At about 7am,a 8 ptr, with kickers off his g2s came in floowing a doe.

Ended up shooting left,opposite,handed.

Pretty lucky I guess.

2006 muzzle loader. i'm pulling my T/C out of the truck and dropped it on the ground. didn't think much about it. get up in my ladder stand and think my rifle doesn't feel right. i notice the wedge pin is missing. thread some para cord through the slot and tie it around the barrell real tight. about 30 minutes after daylight 5 does come by me and i fire praying the barrel don't fly up and knock my head off. nothing they all ran off. about an hour later two more does come by. I fire and they run off. I said screw this i'm going home because i know my rifle is off. As i'm climbing down the ladder a doe comes running back from the way the second pair went. I cross the creek and start up a holler and see blood. the second pair of does i had seen , one of them was hit and found it about a 100 yards up the holler.

2006 ML season opening day (My first ML Hunt) and I pull up to my spot and two deer are standing where I park and run off out into the field. I get out of the truck and get ready to change into my clothes. I was running a bit behind, so it was about 10 minutes until official shooting light. I could see the two deer standing about 100 yds away and they start sparring. they quit and walk down into the woods where my stand is. I get dressed and walk to my stand as soon as i get into the woods i jump a small buck coming my way. I get to my stand and get situated and hit my grunt a couple of times and follow it with snort wheeze (I had just learned about it and wanted to try it). I heard something moving behind me and kept watching the area and here comes this 7 pt out about 75-80 yds away. I stand up on my stand and aim at him and shoot. The smoke clears and he is just standing there looking around. I'm thinking did I hit him then i see he is eating leaves off a sapling. I start reloading and he starts up the trail that will pass right in front of my stand, by the time I finish an put a cap in the gun he is standing about 25 yds away broad side. I shoot and he jumped up in the air and ran 10 ft and stopped and looked around. I'm thinking no way and start reloading. Then I see he is staggering, so i stopped and he tipped over and took his last breathe.

Right after that two coyotes came in and and one tried to go to my deer so I shot him and 30 seconds later a 4 pt comes strolling by. This all happened within 10-15 minutes. fastest paced hunt i've ever been on.
