Yup, black oak, which is in the red family. My blacks are loaded too.

Hard to be certain plinker, but I believe the top photo is a black oak. Yup, black oak, which is in the red family. My blacks are loaded too. In the area where I hunted last year, the blacks had already dropped and the deer had moved on to chestnut oaks by the first week of deer season. Every year and every micro-environment is different, so that may not apply to you, but I'd keep an eye on 'em for early in the season.
I posted some pictures http://www.pursuithunting.com/2009/09/hot-and-nasty.html last year of a black oak dominant tree that was hotter than a firecracker two weeks before the season. There was a tremendous amount of fresh sign. Unfortunately the pattern had changed by the time the season opened. Any of you other old guys like me may remember the Black Oak Arkansas song that was the inspiration for the name "Hot and Nasty" I gave that spot. I included some vintage video just for the fun of it.

Same here Pursuit. The deer went after the chestnut oaks around opening week. Couldn't find that magic tree. But by the 2nd week of october there were three white oaks together that started dropping. After seeing several fresh piles of poop I relocated to 23 yards from them and killed a fat doe the first evening. These trees were GPS'd and hope they perform again.

I'm convinced that there is nothing a deer would rather eat than a white oak acorn (in general).

I have a couple of whiteoaks over my field line and one down next to the pond that are always loaded. Noticed they are dropping yesterday when I mowed.

You think they like White Oak acorns, you should see how they respond to Swamp Chestnut Oak acorns! I would have to list that acorn as #1 preference. Of course, the Swamp Chestnut is in the white oak family (and not to be confused with the Mountain Chestnut Oak).
