I am not having much luck here in east Tenn.I am finding some others like Red, Chestnut ect.but not that many white oaks.
Which could be good for hunting, but this is 2 years in a row up here and I wonder about the health of the heard. I have found some good persimmon trees which is my favorite to hunt around.

Most of ours have plenty of acorns. I ran into a TWRA employee @ Catoosa this week who was doing a survey on Oaks, checking the acorn count.

I could be mixed up here but I believe white oaks can/or will skip a year in acorn production where red oaks will produce every year. If this info is incorrect, please forgive me... but I believe that it is right.

Found some yesterday. I think as the month progresses you will start seeing more and more. Usually start dropping at end of Sept. so it may be a little early yet to see em well. If you haven't tried this, take some binocs. with you and look at the top of the trees for some.

Red oak acorns take two years to mature. White oak only one. Some individual trees will skip years, some produce every year.

BSK is correct. Whites take one year to mature, reds take two. A given red oak tree can produce nuts every year - the two year old nuts will drop, but the immature one year old nuts will stay on the tree.
Acorn production in all species is affected by lots of things including insects, spring temps, rainfall, disease, past production.
If you are having trouble finding white oaks with nuts, try concentrating your search on the north-facing slopes. The ground holds more moisture which often equates to more nuts. I'm definitely seeing that pattern this year where I've been scouting.
Agree too that binocs are a must for seeing them this time of year.

Yea just went out and checked with my binos. and everything seems to have some acorns.Just now getting big enough to see them I just read a little piece that said Leonard LeeRueIII said he wears a size 11 ,and if he puts his foot down and does not cover 9 acorns,it was not a good year.
This is of course after all the nuts have fallen

rather have few if any trees with acorns.....
when they are all dropping, deer tend to scatter .....
makes my job just that much more difficult, but maybe that's what makes it more fun....lol

Good for deer, tough for hunters. Bumper acorn crops produce less deer movement, as deer don't have to go far to find food. Hunter harvest usually increases in a poor acorn year, as good food sources are more limited, forcing more deer travel to reach thse isolated food sources.

That's also true. In bumper acorn years, deer are healthier hence will enter estrus a little earlier than in a poor acorn year.
My rub research also found that bucks make more "sign," especially rubs, in a good acorn year (more excess energy to burn).

Good for deer, tough for hunters. Bumper acorn crops produce less deer movement, as deer don't have to go far to find food. And for hunters, it get's even worse than it appears.
Deer "digest" acorns very slowly compared to many other food items.
This means in a really good acorn year, deer may gorge themselves on acorns before dawn, stay in a bedding area all day "chewing their cud", and have no desire to seek something more to eat until darkness falls again.
So not only do deer not have to travel as much for food in a good acorn year, but they also don't seek food as much during daylight hours.

Even worse Wes, I've seen this MANY, MANY times. I'll have hunting buddies tell me of FANTASTIC deer sign complete with rubs, LOADS of droppings (all age classes-old fresh, in between-i.e. the deer were there a few days ago, yesterday, and a few hours ago), and BEDS with hair.
THey will hunt this spot and NEVER see a deer from their stand.
It is often still warm and DRY well before good chasing. ANd upon further questioning I will more often thatn not find out that these hunters actually have jumped deer while scouting.
What I feel is happening is that the hunters scent lingers in the area, thus pushing the deer over the next ridge where PLENTY of acorns exist.
In other words, PLENTY of food can cause spooky deer to simply "roll on over" to their next acorn flat where there is NO human intrusion.
My best hunting under these conditions has been to search my field notes from bumper crop acorn areas past and not to scout AT ALL. Just hunt FIRST, then scout later!

That's most likely what's to blame the trouble I've had getting on deer for the past several seasons. Suckers lay around all day and stay within a very centralized location. They don't have to move unless disturbed. This is especially true once they become pressured.

I sure wish I was hunting that area! There are some monsters!
I live within 3 miles of rigsbys but hunt a farm that's down on 63 a few miles from LMU. It doesn't border a big area in the park, pretty small, the biggest border is the tacket creek area on the other side of the mountain.

Got a report from my hunting buddy in Hickman County near Primm Springs. Whites and reds are loaded down. Also sent me some trail pics of some very impressive bucks.
Looks to be a great year, if you can find the preferred trees. I think most know what I'm talking about.

Chaney has literally thousands of oak trees......if most are producing at the same time, deer movement stalls considerably.
I sat in a stand overlooking two oaks dropping one year and watched three does eat/bed down/eat/bed down...etc....all day long......they never left my sight all day.....
no other deer came to the trees either, which told me that these were not the only trees producing in the area....
plenty of acorns are great for herd health, but bad for hunting...IMO.

Yup, black oak, which is in the red family. My blacks are loaded too.

Hard to be certain plinker, but I believe the top photo is a black oak. Yup, black oak, which is in the red family. My blacks are loaded too. In the area where I hunted last year, the blacks had already dropped and the deer had moved on to chestnut oaks by the first week of deer season. Every year and every micro-environment is different, so that may not apply to you, but I'd keep an eye on 'em for early in the season.
I posted some pictures http://www.pursuithunting.com/2009/09/hot-and-nasty.html last year of a black oak dominant tree that was hotter than a firecracker two weeks before the season. There was a tremendous amount of fresh sign. Unfortunately the pattern had changed by the time the season opened. Any of you other old guys like me may remember the Black Oak Arkansas song that was the inspiration for the name "Hot and Nasty" I gave that spot. I included some vintage video just for the fun of it.

Same here Pursuit. The deer went after the chestnut oaks around opening week. Couldn't find that magic tree. But by the 2nd week of october there were three white oaks together that started dropping. After seeing several fresh piles of poop I relocated to 23 yards from them and killed a fat doe the first evening. These trees were GPS'd and hope they perform again.

I have a couple of whiteoaks over my field line and one down next to the pond that are always loaded. Noticed they are dropping yesterday when I mowed.

You think they like White Oak acorns, you should see how they respond to Swamp Chestnut Oak acorns! I would have to list that acorn as #1 preference. Of course, the Swamp Chestnut is in the white oak family (and not to be confused with the Mountain Chestnut Oak).

I've only seen one of them though. The nuts were the size of golf balls and the deer killed them. Don't have access to that property any more.

Unfortunatey, few areas in TN (outside of the swampy slews of West TN) have many Swamp Chestnut Oaks.

I will agree on the White oak family being king for the deer. They have helped me put a lot of arrows through my intended targets over the years thats for sure! There isnt a better place in the woods than under the White oak that they have chosen at that particular time to feed on, simply the best bow hunting, at completely relaxed, pre occupied, and stationary deer, that you can find! I have literally shot deer and wether they run off or just take a couple jumps and fall over, other deer there simply watch them and go back to feeding. Then 'thump' on the next one! You gotta love it!
