BSK, all jokes aside, your truly missing out on some of the most exciting deer hunting known to man! There is nothing better than having to wait until a deer is literally right under you, getting drawn back without detection, waiting for the perfect shot, and putting an arrow precisely thru the boiler room. Watching as it runs away and waiting for his legs to buckle and fall over within sight/hearing, theres just nothing like it!!! Following a good arrow shot deer's blood trail, when necessary, is like a kid following the candy to an easter basket! \:D
I could go on and on, get your bow back out BSK, knowing how much you love deer hunting and how much you know about them, its a crime for you not to bowhunt!!! \:\)

Winchester,

I used to be a hard-core bow-hunter. I hunted every weekend of bow season from 1980 to 1992.

However, I finally realized I wasn't enjoying myself, and it was more just "going through the motions" as an excuse to be in the woods.

We were placing too much pressure on the deer at the time we were carrying the lowest odds weapon. Due to lack of predictable travel patterns, we RARELY get more than one encounter with a particular older buck. When we bow hunted, we were having those "once-per-season" encounters during bow season, with the buck out of bow range. By the time MZ and gun rolled around the bucks had reacted to our hunting pressure by going nocturnal.

Since we quite bow-hunting our success rate on older to mature bucks has gone WAY up. We now enjoy our hunting much more and the increased success rate on older bucks is one of the primary reasons we enjoy our hunting more.

Although I'll be the first to admit, I learned more about deer behavior while bow-hunting than at all other times of the year combined.

I totally agree with you about the pressure reducing future opportunity when you're carrying an more effective weapon.

However, I think that you would have still found your opportunities to take those older bucks (now) greatly increased EVEN IF you had continued bowhunting your property.

I have a different take on this.
It's not so much the fact that you were "bowhunting" as it was you were forced (by the short-range weapon) into doing more "observation" than shooting. Thus, you learn so much more than by simply shooting the first deer seen.

Same thing happens when you voluntarily begin doing more observing than shooting during the gun seasons. In fact, I've had much more meaningful deer movement to observe during the November muzzleloader segment than in the October archery segment. Amazing things can happen when you change your "mindset". \:\)

I understand BSK, if you only hunt one place (one tract of land) all season, and several people are hunting, you would have to be super careful (almost impossible) to bow hunt it and not let the deer know they are being hunted. I too have a few places I dont hunt until gun season rolls around, however this is because they arent conducive to bow hunting ( thick and few good trees). Anytime I can, I try to kill my best bucks with a bow, but once they know they are being hunted the gig is up for a while, as they will go underground on you quick!
I will also agree that bow hunting will, and has for me, teach you more about deer than anything else you can do. Dealing with them where you simply observe their habits instead of leveling the crosshairs at 50 yards and pulling the trigger, will reveal to you so much you never knew existed!
